jtesch Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 I just picked up a basically new Fuego BC reel and since I can't stand leaving my reels stock I want to try a spool change. Pretty sure I'm gonna get a Z-100 gigas spool as I have a couple and love them but I have a spool from a Zillion laying around (the red spool from a HSA I think) and was wondering if this would be an upgrade over the stock Fuego. My gut feeling is probably not much of an upgrade if any. Boca lightnings and carbon tec drag already on the way. Anyone use the HLC spools I would love an honest opinion on them or ideas on other spools Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted June 5, 2014 Super User Posted June 5, 2014 I have one with the red Zillion spool in it, and while it looks nice I do not notice much of an upgrade in performance. I have another with the 100M spool in it and it is a noticeable upgrade. There is a member at TT that just upgraded his Fuego to an HLC spool and give his opinion on it recently. Great Reel, Congrats Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted June 5, 2014 Super User Posted June 5, 2014 The 100m spool from the TDZ 100m US Trails reel is outstanding. It is very good caster of baits in a variety of moderatetly light to standard weight ranges. It will absolutely launch aerodynamic baits with ease and great distances. I use mine on an NRX 873 CRR for jigs, Texas rigs, and C-rigs. Finding an HLC spool will be fairly difficult and much more costly than a 100m gigas spool. Since you already plan on doing upgrades I would start with abec7 level bearings as the first upgrade after fishing the stock reel first. If the gains are good enough you may not need it. If you feel like it isn't significant enough then look for a spool upgrade. Different reels respond differently to different upgrades IMO. Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted June 5, 2014 Super User Posted June 5, 2014 japantackle.com has the HLC spool for $115 in stock, they also have the new Tatula Type R shallow spool listed at $49 but is currently backordered, bet they sell a few of these at that price. Quote
jtesch Posted June 5, 2014 Author Posted June 5, 2014 You know, I've used ABEC 7's in several reels(orange seals) and also used ZPI's and Hedge hogs and tried the Boca lightnings and I'm perfectly happy with them. I'm a hard caster and I don't notice any loss with the lightning s. I'm pretty sure I'll get the Gigas spool as I'm very happy with the ones I put in my zillions. Thanks for the help all. Quote
