Mattfrom_NJ Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 I picked up one of these for $20 a month ago. Just curious if anyone else has one and what they use it for. It's 7' medium power w moderate action. I assume from the name it's supposed to be used for cranks. Anyone throw cranks on spinning gear? Any reel recommendations? Thanks Quote
0119 Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Yup, I do. It'll double for some topwaters too. I stick with 3000/30 size spinners now since there is such a small weight penalty and the wider spool gives me better performance. I'll avoid mentioning a brand but I'm sure the worshippers will throw something out very soon..... Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted June 3, 2014 Super User Posted June 3, 2014 I was looking at that very rod yesterday, seems like it would load well for lighter baits. One thing to consider when using a spinning reel for crankbaits is IPT, while a baitcaster and a spinning reel may have similar gear raitos, the spinning reel typically has a much higher IPT due to spool size. If you run smaller crankbaits too fast they do not perform well in my opinion. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted June 3, 2014 Super User Posted June 3, 2014 I had that rod it was a great little rod... Great for pop r's and Dt 4 my son thinks he needs it worse! I paid over a 100$ for mine.. So at 20$ man I wish I ran into that!! Quote
craww Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Made a resolution to get back to my roots and hit the creeks and rivers a lot this year, and this rod has treated me well. Currently using a Abu Orra SX w/15lb power pro, occasionally w/a leader. I've primarily used it for 1/8 poppers, rebel craws, and it is perfect for the bandit 100's. It also does well with a super spook jr's and RC 1.5's. I used it today with a shakey head as I only carry one rod, caught a bunch of fish. It does okay for close single hook baits at close range (braid helps speed it up) but obviously its not ideal. Quote
Mattfrom_NJ Posted June 3, 2014 Author Posted June 3, 2014 Thanks for the input guys. I've thrown a few square bills on this rod and most run OK but some seem to spin on their sides. I'm not sure whether this is a function of the rod though. I'll definitely be throwing some spooks w it, I think I could walk them better w a spinning rod than casting. Quote
