Preytorien Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 I've wondered the same thing. Hopefully someone weighs in with information. They sure look like they'd help. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted June 3, 2014 Super User Posted June 3, 2014 Looks very interesting and something that I've been looking for, for a while. I am going to get one and I'll review it after some use. carlm01 ~ Thank you for putting this up. Below is a shot of craft it will be going on. A-Jay Quote
carlm01 Posted June 3, 2014 Author Posted June 3, 2014 Just ordered one myself ,We'll see how it works Quote
wordfactories Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 I had to look this up.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwGcG54BeXY Looks cool, though probably only helpful for small craft like shown.. Quote
carlm01 Posted June 4, 2014 Author Posted June 4, 2014 Well that's how it's advertised .I have a small inflatable pontoon boat ,So hopefully it works for me LOL, I should have it before the weekend and will try it out and let everyone know how it works on my boat ... Quote
carlm01 Posted June 4, 2014 Author Posted June 4, 2014 A-Jay ,Good luck , hope it does the trick for ya ... Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 If the motor and rudder are mounted on the front of a Bass Raider will it keep the tail from spinning around? Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted June 18, 2014 Super User Posted June 18, 2014 Update ~ I've got the Bullnose rudder mounted on a Minn Kota 55 on the transom. (boat pic below) I'm happy with it's performance so far. Not a super dramatic difference in handling of my particular vessel. However, the boat does track better on a straight line and responds faster to turns. I believe when it's mounted on a smaller &/or lighter vessel, the rudder's affects would be more apparent. Like I said - nothing but good so far. A-Jay Quote
carlm01 Posted June 18, 2014 Author Posted June 18, 2014 A-Jay I agree , I've had mine on for a bout 2 weeks now and does make a world of difference for a smaller boat , I think it was designed for a pontoon style boat.. I can turn much better and have no sideways tracking now... All in all it was a good investment ... 1 Quote

Super User Goose52 Posted June 18, 2014 Super User Posted June 18, 2014 You have me sold! Where did you guys source this wondrous item? Also - have you noticed any tendency for the unit to twist out of alignment...or are the clamps holding well? Quote
carlm01 Posted June 18, 2014 Author Posted June 18, 2014 No twist and I use mine on a 40lb MK I got mine on ebay Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted June 18, 2014 Super User Posted June 18, 2014 No twist and I use mine on a 40lb MK I got mine on ebay Great - I'll have to do some shopping! Thanks. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted June 22, 2014 Super User Posted June 22, 2014 I got my rudder in a couple days ago, installed it on the MK 45lb Traxxis TM that powers my 12' canoe, and had it on the water for 5 hours this morning. As A-Jay and carlm01 mentioned above, there is a discernible difference in handling. My perception is that the boat reacts to steering inputs more quickly, and that probably the turn-radius is reduced as well. The rudder is solid on the TM shaft and as carlm01 said, there is NO twisting of the unit on the shaft. The BIGGEST advantage that I saw on the water today is that now I have some rudder authority when drifting, whereas before I essentially had none - the boat was like a cork when drifting. Now, I can somewhat steer the boat when in a drift. THIS is worth the price of admission alone, to me. Secondarily, I am also pleased with the change in power shut-off stability. In other words, when I would kill the motor before, the boat would immediately yaw significantly to the right - due to the drag of the TM being mounted on the right side. Now, on power shut-off, there is much less yaw, and I have the ability to correct the yaw that is left with the rudder. So, for me, well worth the money and THANKS to carlm01 for posting about this product... 1 Quote
WPCfishing Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 I found this thread in a Google search. Glad I did. So my 14' canoe and 55# Rip Tide will benefit from the rudder? I use my canoe in the reverse often because I like to fish alone. Do you guys think it will help or hinder the rudder performance? Also does it affect top end speed or acceleration? Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted July 27, 2015 Super User Posted July 27, 2015 Yes, I believe that you will see a noticeable benefit. When operating in reverse, I imagine that smaller control movements than you are used to will be necessary. NO affect on top speed or acceleration. I have had my TM with this rudder on the water 95 times since I bought it...each time I appreciate the benefits that it offers for me, as described in my earlier post (post #15) in this thread. Quote

I purchased this exact model not long after the initial post here. It's on the Old Town pictured below and I'm very happy with it. When not anchored and fishing a spot, I'm fishing off the stern with the motor in slow reverse to move & / or hold position. The rudder helps track straight instead of "Crabbing" in a cross wind. carlm01 Posted July 27, 2015 Author Posted July 27, 2015 I agree it works great on my little inflatable it still walks a little but not nearly as much as it did... no skegs Quote
wnspain Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 If the motor and rudder are mounted on the front of a Bass Raider will it keep the tail from spinning around? I'm not sure what you are referring to (tail spinning around) with the motor up front. I have both a bow mount MG Bulldog, and a transom mount MK Endura. I run all configurations, including both when I think ill need it. With the bow mount, do you distribute weight evenly so that boat sponsons are level in the water? The only time mine has ever spun is when bow weight was significantly heavier that stern, remedy was to adjust position of heaviest movable object... Just slid my seat back. 1 Quote
Neil McCauley Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 I have a 55 lb MK C2 on my 14 ft canoe. The tracking is really awful. If you are cruising at 4-5mph but not paying 100% attention to the horizon it veers off course. I wonder if the rudder will help? Quote

If you are cruising at 4-5mph but not paying 100% attention to the horizon it veers off course. I wonder if the rudder will help? It might help some...but canoes are just so susceptible to cross winds, current, etc. that I think you will always have this issue - especially if you have a round or flat bottom canoe with no type of keel. I have one full length and two shorter keels (albeit shallow ones) on my Radisson, plus this rudder on the TM, and still have the same issue of the boat not tracking well... Quote

It's tempting to try to make a keel. Something that can be tied to the gunwales. Quote
WPCfishing Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 I did buy the rudder.. It really has made a difference. The canoe tracks and steers better, especially backing up. The other thing I like about it is, it keeps weeds off the prop. In the heavy stuff it has made a big difference. Money well spent.. Thx for the encouragement to buy. Quote
