I throw mostly black and occasionaly white. I start by fishing them slow dead slow just enough to keep it ontop of the water. As the fish dictate I start to burn them as fast as I can all depends. if there just chasing and not bitting I crawl them slow if there hammering it putting on a show i make it scream across the top like a jet.

As far as size I got some little bitty ones that are like 1/8th oz maybe there small like 1.5" or smaller and I got the monster dual 2 and 3 blade types. Funny thing is my itty bitty ones catch me more and bigger fish and the big loud clacky ones catch me dinks ;)

It's hard to beat a black buzzbait with a black blade during these periods.

I have caught my biggest fish on black buzzbaits with a silver blade. The stan sloan zorro head knockers is the buzzbaits I use. However, I don't have the blade knock against the head, it's just way too noisey for my liking. I just bend the wire to get the blade really close to the head. I use a june bug lizard(about half of it anyway) for the trailer and it seems to work really well. During the day I will use a white or chartruse skirt depending on how clear or muddy the water is. I am probably missing out but I don't start throwing buzzbaits until the end of May here in western NC.

I throw a 1/2 oz but the 3/8 seems to be pretty popular with most guys, especially the cavitron. I used to throw a lunker lures until I went with 2 guys who absolutely waxed me with the stan sloan. My only advice to you is to reel it as slow as you can and still keep it on the water at first. Then speed it up if you don't get any bites. I have caught my best fish either parrallelling it with the bank, near laydowns, or on really dark new moon nights. They always seem to hit right at the boat on those dark nights and scare me to death!!! ;)

My favorite and pretty much only color that I use for buzzbaits is black with a silver blade. I mostly use Lunker Lure buzzbaits in 3/8 oz. because they have a really unique sound that I like. Like Clayton86 said, I will always start out with a really slow retrieve because I believe thats what will get me the most strikes but if nothings happening I will run them faster.

I use 2 colors, black on black with a black blade and white with chartreuse and a gold blade and that is it. I also only use 3/8oz Cavitrons.

I never caught anything on a buzzbait either. But with my success with the 1/8oz spinnerbaits i been using a mepps/mister twister split double tail trailer. My point is do you use a trailer on your buzzbaits?

Black Cavitron Buzzbait, caught me some nice fish in the early A.M summer and late summer evenings

No trailer, but a stinger hook is not a bad idea.

You answered you're own question...LOL...you have no confidence with them and you used them a little.

Buzzbaits can be a lure that can give you a lot of headaches, heartbreaks and great rewards. You think they should produce, but they don't; the time you get a fish on one, they come unbuttoned; the fish you end up getting is bigger than you expect. That's a buzzbait.

You sound like your still pretty new to bass fishing, but I suggest that you stick to basics at first and then expand:

Color: Light colored buzzbaits on clear sunny days and dark colored on overcast and low light conditions (evening/before sun-up) and don't be afraid to mix that up. The fish will tell you what they want.

Speed: On an aluminum blade, you can bend, slightly, the wings of the blade in and out to vary the retrieve speed. Bring a Bic pen with you so that when you bend back in, you can recreate the curvature of the blade with the pen. By doing this you can make it go faster or slower.

Retrieve: Steady and fast or steady and slow: staright retrieve an adjust the pace - fast or slow.

Stop and go: Stop and go will drop the bait in the water a bit and then you'll have to speed it up a bit to get it back on plane and on top of the water. I use this a lot, fish love it!

Sound: Leave as is with an aluminum blade; this will produce a moderate sound. Bend the wire blade arm so that the blade "ticks" the head of the lure or the wire, this will produce lot louder sound.

Now it's up to you to find the structure and cover to put the above to work.

Hope this helps and go get some fish!

I use black most of the time with either a gold or black blade. In clear water or lakes with lots of shad I use white with a white blade. Slow is usually the best way to go.

Some suggestinos for you to consider:

Cavitrons are excellent. Suggest using them.

White or black skirts. Black in the early AM and evening. White during the day. However, sometimes other colors seem to do well depending on the cloud cover and water clarity.

Always use a trailer hook.

Heavy rod will allow you to cast them easier although a medium heavy rod can also be sufficient.

Balance reel with buzzbait so that the spool stops when the buzzbait his the water.

Start reeling buzzbait back to you either as it hits the water or just before it hits the water.

Always check drag to be sure it is tight enough to allow you to set the hook without slipage.

Water temperature has to be 55* or warmer.

One day take only buzzbaits with you and use them all day. Make repeated casts at a target like you would do with a spinnerbait.

Have fun and let us know how you do. :)

I've never had a lot of luck with buzz baits. I do like throwing a large black jitterbug first thing in the morning.

I use a 3/8 oz Pink and White skirt with a silver blade and a 3/8 oz Black and Red skirt with a black blade. I have a number of other colors, but these two always seem to attract the hits.

3/8 oz Cavitron red blade black body. Tore it up last season.

First post is to drag up something from 6 years ago?  The OP has since graduated  college and married.

When is a durable double buzzer available? I currently use a local hand made double buzzer that is no longer available.

Tom

I love buzzbaits . Have worn a bunch of them out over the decades . Black , white ,chartreuse ,yellow they all work  .Make sure they squeal by crimping the rivet in place . Hold them out the window on the way to the lake . I think a buzzbait is a buzzbait and  some of my best ones have been generic . The three I have in my box right now  are Lunker Lure , Cavitron and homemade ones .I've been using the homemade ones the most .

Ahhhh 6 year old post .
