I've been a die-hard Shimano fan for many years now. But the Cabela's sales flier mentions the Summit is on sale. A savings of $20.00. Now I plan on mounting the 1000 (smallest size) on a 9' B n' M crappie rod, so getting a matching reel of this presumed quality for under $40.00 sounds pretty good to me! I won't pull the trigger on the deal until after I hear from some of you folks. :)

I don't think they're really on "sale." They're a Cabela's exclusive reel and they've had them on sale since the day they came out. I'm sure they're a decent $40-$50 quality reel.

Spend a little more and get a President. They are phenomenal reels and I love mine. Any Pflueger reel is a great bet vs. Competition under the $150 price point.

The summit is basically the equivalent to a trion. I have 3 pflueger reels, president, president XT and Templar. All great reels this one should serve you well. I have heard nothing but good from folks that had the trion.

Sorry to reply to an old thread.  I have owned 2 Pflueger Presidents and have played around with the Pflueger Trion at Cabelas.  I recently purchased the Pflueger Summit for $39.  I was looking for an inexpensive real around $30.  I check out all the reels at Cabelas for $40 or less and the Pfueger Summit felt the smoothes to me.  It also looks nice.  IMO it is smoother than the trion and very close to the President that I can't tell what is smoother.

I also own a Shimano Symetre.  The Symetre is a bit smoother BUT not $60 smoother.

So bottom line,  The Pflueger Summit is an awesome reel and I would have a hard time picking a smoother reel in the less than $75 catagory.

From my limited experience, Pflueger makes smoother reels at the same price point as Shimano.  Shimano reels feel more solid and higher quality.

I tried out the Summit and while it's not a bad reel -- definitely better than a Trion and not nearly as good as the rest of the line -- I don't think I could buy one again.

The reason is that it is nearly impossible to get it worked on or find replacement parts, which effectively makes it disposable. Even at $40, that's not good. I called Pflueger about mine and they told me that I needed to call a small shop in Iowa... Which then sent me to another small shop in Iowa. I was told that they could send me a "similar part", but it was a completely different color.

Every other model, Pflueger can replace and repair, but not this one due to being a Cabela's exclusive.
