wife suprised me with a new reel and pole. She got me a BPS open baitcaster with a new rod also. :) I know it will work well for Catfishing, but wondered if it would work for bassin also? I think she had it setup with 15lb test line.

Need make, model numbers to determine what you have??

Will it work??? I dunno, I wouldn't take a chance and let the bass see it, they may not bite..... :rolleyes7:

In all seriousness, if you are comfortable making lots of casts with it during an outing, then use it.  At 9-10 oz, I could see it causing me fatigue after a long day.

You will know if it's going to work for you after a trip or two.

Several years ago a friend of mine purchased two of those combos, they didn´t last long. For something like cat/carp fishing they are fine, you cast and wait so there´s little wear, bass fishing is another animal, you cast and retrieve a lot and that wears equipment out.

Compared to today's state of the art light reels and rods the combo is considered heavy. However the reel is a knock off of the iconic Shimano Calcutta, so don't pooh pooh the fact it's round and weighs nearly 10 ounces.

You will need to learn how to cast a baitcasting reel so take some time and look at this sites threads and video's for suggestions how to cast a baitcasting reel.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, everyone wishes their wives were as caring about your fishing, she deserves a big thank you!

Tens of thousands of bass have been caught on reels just like that over the last 40 years or more. No, it's not as light as some other reels, but it's not like its a 10 pound hammer. Use it, it will work fine.

I got the reel itself, not the combo that they had. Instead its on a Ugly Stick rod :) Gonna take it catfishing here in a few at the Savannah River with the kids :) May try bassing it sometime. Of course I could talk the wifey into just getting me a new baitcaster also :)

It's more a knockoff of the Ambassadeur reels, IMO.

I have a friend that uses round reels like these exclusively. Probably not the best option, but they're useable. You will likely struggle with weights below 1/2oz, but for bigger baits it'll throw them just fine.

Gentlemen, it's not about reel type, it's about that specific reel brand, I stand behind my original statement, a friend of mine purchased 2 combos of that specific reel and they lasted less than a couple of years because he used them for bass fishing, the gears and release button literally wore away.

2 years out of a $40 reel is more than I'd expect.

I told him to purchase a Cardiff instead and that reel would have lasted him a lifetime. You can take a horse to the water but can't make it drink it.
