Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 30, 2014 Super User Posted May 30, 2014 Should have posted this a couple days ago, but just thought of it on the way to work this morning. I am visiting relation in Florida for 2 weeks. We fish 10" unweighted worms the majority of the time. I'd like to know what other lures I could take that would be effective at this time of year. Thanks. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted May 30, 2014 Super User Posted May 30, 2014 Bigger wood top waters... Wood prop baits... Punch rigs.. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 30, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 30, 2014 We have stores, here. And I will probably buy more. However, I have room in luggage, more lures at home than I'll ever use, and I don't have several hundred $$$ to spend on new lures at this time. Also I would rather depend on the suggestions from you guys who are actually fishing in the area rather than depend on a sales clerk who may or may not know the first thing about fishing. Quote
FrankW Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Hi new2BC4bass, What works has a lot to do with what part of Florida you will be fishing and what grasses you have. Are you fishing big lakes or small ponds? South Florida is ahead of Central Florida on how high the grass are. Centeral Florida is ahead of North Florida. Hydrilla for instance could be topped out with some mats. Or, it could be topped out in shallow water but not so in deep water. Will you be fishing from a boat? Frank Quote
Super User MCS Posted May 30, 2014 Super User Posted May 30, 2014 10" worms will work.....But I will assume you are bank beating ponds.....Bring hollow body frogs, 10" worms, some light bullet weights as in the summer they tend to go a little deeper. A favorite here is the gambler Big EZ or EZ swimmer. Flukes, spinnerbaits, texas rigged creatures, swim jigs. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 I visit the Orlando area for a few weeks each year, I pack light, and have narrowed it down to my must haves when visiting. Bullfrog or the dark version of bullfrog War Eagle Green White and Sexy Shad spinnerbaits. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted May 30, 2014 Super User Posted May 30, 2014 What part of FL are you going to? Based on that, I am sure someone from the region can fill you in on what is working most. If your coming to South Fl, several of us can give you plenty of info... Quote
IAY Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 As most of the Florida natives above me have stated, it is better to post about what region you are visiting when asking for what to bring. I just came back from Florida(Miami area) last week, and I personally went to hunt for the Peacock Bass in that area. I have always heard about how Peacocks were so good at hitting the top water so I threw my Sammy,X-pod,Popmax all day, but I got no hits. What I finally started to catch them on was with the little 1/4 oz X-rap jerkbaits. I recommend carrying jerkbaits in both 1/2 oz and 1/4 oz size with natural and killer clown color. The water in that area was so clear that, you can definitely get some follows throwing jerkbaits around. Quote

Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 30, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 30, 2014 Will be in Deland about 30-35 minutes north of Orlando and 25 minutes from Daytona. We fish from a small boat. We fish smaller lakes. I have all the lures MCS suggested. Just picked up 1/4 oz. X-rap jerkbaits last night on sale at Walmart, and already have larger sizes. Spinnerbaits are a favorite of mine, and I made my bro-in-law a believer in them last year. He now has a few of his own. john44 thanks a lot for the list. Only have a few that are on it....very few. May pick up a few others on your list once we get there. Appreciate all the help. 1 Quote

Thanks for the offer friend No problem we are here to help each other. In the future, the Miami Int Airport lakes are Captain Shane's backyard. He is extremely helpful and a really nice guy. He would not hesitate to point you in the right direction. He has helped me several times. Quote

BassObsessed Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 Don't forget a black buzzbait, it worked well for me in some of the smaller ponds when I was in the Orlando area. Quote
primetime Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 start your day with a bomber long a floating jerkbait and any color is good as long as it has some orange/chart on the belly since panfish are still spawning in some lakes, just finishing up, and you can throw it a mile, doubles as topwater and wake bait as you can work it over submerged grass that is up to about a foot to the surface....Bigger Fish will hit the Long A, or Bang o Lure when it is resting after the pause..... I find that if I am going to throw plastics...I like a large 10" squirmin worm any natural color as long as tail is chartruese, or black and blue often helps out. In orlando area, ribbon tails 10" are always hot, and blue saphire silver flake heavy in tail has been doing well. depending on weeds, it is hard to beat a drop shot or shaky rig if you find hard bottom and if you do, that is typically a good spot this time of year since most Florida lakes are Muddy and sand or hard bottom works best for the jighead imo....I like a roboworm, trick worm, kalins sizmic shad, rage tail lobster, menace, any creature really...make sure you have junebug, something with chartruese, and a swimbait or fluke in green-watermelon seed, baby bass..I find those 3 colors to always be great, add in blacks, red shad, gp gold flake, and always have a 1/2 oz. rattle trap in chrome blue top or tilapia/firetiger color....good luck Quote
CalBassin Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 To be honest, all you need to bring are YOUR confidence baits!! Bass are bass at the end of the day and will bite a jig, soft plastic, ect. anywhere in the country. For example I always use my confidence baits when I travel and those are: 1. Siebert Outdoors jigs usually a black and blue and a natural color 2. Some crankbaits 3. Punch rig 4 . Light Texas rigs See? That's only 4 set ups to bring so you don't have to over think things. Sometimes the only reason you can't catch a fish is because you're over thinking things. So go simple. Bring only the baits you have 110% confidence in. If you have no confidence in a bait then bring baits that you'd like to have confidence in and ONLY fish those baits. Master those baits!! Practice makes perfect! Quote
