Robert Riley Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Hey Guys So I've noticed that the bluegill are sitting on beds in my local lake. Sooo if the bass are no longer on their beds, where are they? If you see this, is there something specifically that you fish? Like technique or lure wise? Quote
georgeyew Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Here in VA, we have bluegills and bass on beds at the same time. Quote
porkleaker Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Bluegills just started spawning here recently but the bass haven't started yet, I image they will within the next week or so. Quote
Chris9999 Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 If you are asking about catching blue gill then anything. They will bite anything. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted May 29, 2014 Super User Posted May 29, 2014 If bluegill are spawning, don't worry nice bass are in the vicinity. They also know bluegills are spawning and payback is a ..... rhymes with twitch. lol.... 2 Quote

I watched a video of a guy fishing some lake in Ohio with bedding blue gill and he caught a couple bass near the beds. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted May 29, 2014 Super User Posted May 29, 2014 Mostly all the bass in the lake and pond I fish have already spawned and started the transition to deeper water lol... Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 29, 2014 Super User Posted May 29, 2014 Bluegill start to spawn about the same time the majority bass are are finished. Bass should be post spawn, some guarding fry, most moved into deeper water to recuperate. The bass have been fending off the bluegill and now it's pay back time, bass target the bluegill. Fish a little deep with slower moving lures like bluegill swimbaits or whatever post spawn presentation works for you. Crappie usually spawn before bass. Tom 3 Quote

So I should toss some divers 10-20 feet off the bank? I'll admit, fishing in more than 5 feet of water intimidates me Quote
Dyerbassman Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Try a bluegill imitation, such as a jig or a squarebill. Like everyone else mentioned, its payback time for the bass. They are looking to eat some gills! Quote
macmichael Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Try a shell cracker in green pumpkin rigged sideways. Looks just like a blue gill. A great bait. Quote
Super User everythingthatswims Posted June 1, 2014 Super User Posted June 1, 2014 There is basically always at least one good bass hanging out near a bluegill bed colony, the beds attract little gills that try to eat the eggs, and bass take advantage of that. 1 Quote
DarthHippie Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Caught a few nice bass on these beds the other morning. This lake has never been this clear that I can remember. Bass don't appear to be bedding yet. The fish I caught were on Pop-R's cast from a long distance. Gills would often be biting at the little tail then bam! Quote
BassObsessed Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 A few ponds that I fished recently the bluegill were on beds and I was catching alot of bass on different color lipless crankbaits. Quote
Robert Riley Posted June 2, 2014 Author Posted June 2, 2014 Thanks guys! I went out the other day with a bluegill colored swim jig, caught a few dinks. Now I just wonder if there is even anything bigger in the lake itself haha! Quote
nepabassfishing Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 Funny how different lakes vary. Here in Pennsylvania it seems the bass spawn first and are followed by the bluegills. At the lake I fish regularly the bass have already finished spawning and have moved deeper. The gills are on the beds. They hit everything to the point where I pretty much have had soft plastics torn up after 5-10 mins of fishing. Quote
Nashua Nev Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 seem the same up here in NH . Largemouth are mostly completely done. Smallmouth , some are still on beds. The sunfish have moved in on the LM and SM empty beds. Quote
