ofl0926 Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 hey whats up everyone. i am new here and have been reading the threads on tackle. i live in miami, fl and i am trying to do more fishing since i just got back from deployment. i want to go ahead and purchase some lures and want some tips on what to choose for my area since i will be fishing of the banks and not in a boat. thanks in advance Quote
Kowen117 Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 It depends on what the main type of prey is in your area. Imo a fluke type bait is one of the most versatile and most useful baits there is. you should also pick up some crankbaits/jigs too. It really just depends on what the depth, water color, and cover is and based on that you can throw different types of baits Quote
ofl0926 Posted March 26, 2011 Author Posted March 26, 2011 i will be fishing lakes and canals. well now that summer time is coming, it will be cloudy and possibly raining. but when its not the skys are clear but the water i would say is a little dark. i know i am picking up some senkos and ika as stated in one of the stickies. i might pick up a torpedo as well cause i had luck with those with peacock bass Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted March 26, 2011 Super User Posted March 26, 2011 If I lived where you lived, I'd get into snake head fishing. They hit mostly the same lures that bass do. Nobody cares how many you catch and kill. They are a great tasting fish. Hey - you live in south Florida - that's the land of retired geezers. I'd bet if you ask around someone is going fishing every day and wouldn't mind the company. Just a thought. Quote

Super User Alpster Posted March 26, 2011 Super User Posted March 26, 2011 Fishing from the bank.... 5" Senkos (pumpkin seed color) 7 1/2" Culprit worms (black shad color) Cavitron Buzzbaits (early morning or late evening) "Charlie Brewer Slider" or "Spot remover" Jig heads "Zoom" trick worms and finesse worms to use on aforementioned jig heads. These ought to get you going until you learn what the locals are catching them on. You can't go wrong with these baits from the bank, I guarantee it! Ronnie Quote
Kowen117 Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 A swimbait would be a great option too. Just match the hatch and youll be good to go. Tru tungsten has some 5 inch swimbaits on sale a B.T.D for only 9 dollars and free shipping on order over $50. Also if you don't mind me asking what branch of military were you in? And I would just like to thank you for your service to our country. Quote

Big-B_2579 Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 I agree with most everything prev. said , can't go wrong with jigs and worms in black , blue , purple , pumpkin , green pumpkin , and watermelon colors , or any combinations close to those colors. Also , I used to have trouble when buying cranks (1,000,000 different colors to choose from) . I read somewhere (maybe this site) to stick with 3 basic colors : shad/minnow , chartreuse , and crawfish. This really helped me as far as wondering what colors are "good". Hope this helps you narrow it down. P.S. , I wish I had your problem (need to fill a box) I don't think I could get another hook in any of mine . Quote

piscicidal Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 You're off to a good start. Fishing in South Florida you should add sweet beavers, horny toads and skinny dippers/big ez to the list of "staples". The spot remover/trick worm set up that Ronnie mentioned will serve you well in the canals. And the senko can't be beat when the fish are in a neutral mood. Get some Zoom magnum trick worms also, worked weightless. Ol monster 10" worms are awesome in the canals, also. I would add a couple pointers, red eye shads, and a zara spook and you are ready for some South Florida canal bassin! Welcome home. Quote

The Doctor Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 5" Senko (wacky rig or t-rig and let it fall onto the weeds) 7.5" Ribbontail (surface lure or hop through the grass) 4" tube (surface lure or hop through the grass) Frog (on top of the slop) Jig & Pig (shoreline structure) I think those would be my basic choices Quote
L a r r y Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 WELCOME BACK TO THE WORLD!!!!! As a prior blue suiter, I'm envious that you are at Homestead, I tried to get there Like others have said, pick up some Senkos, greens, black color variations work very well. Also pick up some topwater baits, buzzbaits in white, black, white/chartreuse. And also some frogs, whether they are the hollow body frogs, or the plastic ribbit frogs. Cranks, it depends on the color of the baitfish. Since you guys have so many different tropical fish there, just see how they are colored, and go from there. Quote
zach t Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 senkos war eagle spinnerbaits in blue herring and chartruese Spro Lil John swim baits Pop-R Quote
