Robertqq Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Hello, Realize that this is a sport, and not a science, but was curious about what other's have experienced, and perhaps also "why". Do Pond fishing outside of Boston. Pond has the typical variety: Lots of Crappie, Largemouth and Smallmout, Chain Pickeral, and Yellow perch. My favoriet lure is, and always has been one of the Mepps in-line Aglia Spinners. Nearly always works, and seems to work on most everything. I have found that the Un-Dressed, bare hook works best, by far. The Dressed one's don't produce nearly as many; they work, but not as well, for sure. Anyone else experience this difference ? Any ideas why ? Bob Quote
RMcDuffee726 Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Usually when I throw my spinner-baits it is always undressed. I'm not dealing with monster bass in New Hampshire, so I assume the trailer would sometimes discourage the bass to hit my bait. I think it all depends on location, and how aggressive the bass are feeling. Quote
Super User Raul Posted May 27, 2014 Super User Posted May 27, 2014 I have experienced no difference between them and I´m not talking about today I used a plain one and the next day I used a dressed one, I´m talking about using both during the same trip. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted May 27, 2014 Super User Posted May 27, 2014 I was shown the undressed Mepps several years ago by a guide and have used nothing else since. Besides catching a lot of fish, they are cheaper than the squirrel tail versions. I use them in shallow, rocky rivers and tend to lose a few so saving some money helps. Quote
Robertqq Posted May 27, 2014 Author Posted May 27, 2014 From OP: Good info., thanks Guys. Forgot to ask in the original Post: Any thoughts or opinions on Treble Vs. Single Hooks (for the Mepps Spinners) in the smaller <size 4 sizes ? Why ? Thanks again, Bob Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted May 27, 2014 Super User Posted May 27, 2014 Just the opposite for my rivers/creeks I always, always did better with squirrel tail... Geez.. Now I feel old! Used to sell squirrel tails to Mepps... With my dads help!! 1 Quote
georgeyew Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 A few of my Panther Martin spinners came with single hooks on them. They seem to hold the fish very well, at least as well as the trebles. 1 Quote
bassguytom Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 I can only seem to get my spinners undressed after dinner and a movie? It seems like most people like their spinners undressed from the get go. Wish I could figure that one out. 2 Quote
John Hansen Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Undressed here. Have a couple dressed ones that have never caught a fish. Not sure what it is, even the ones with a little marabou on the hook don't work for me. I like trebles more, seem to get more consistent hook sets but I sure hate having to remove the trebles from small trout or pan fish that overload their eyes and somehow get large trebles with all 3 hooks set in their mouth... had a small panfish somehow get one barb on the bottom jaw, one on upper, and other in the gill area. It gets annoying so when I buy a new spinner I buy 2. One of them I will usually got 2 of the hooks off and turn the treble into a single hook. Quote
Scyco Posted August 24, 2019 Posted August 24, 2019 Use u dressed if you are going for numbers. They have a smaller profile so any sized fish will hit. Use dressed for trophy fish, larger fish like larger lures, you wont catch as many, but youll catch bigger fish. 1 Quote
LCG Posted August 25, 2019 Posted August 25, 2019 A #3 or 4 mepps undressed gold in line spinner has worked wonders for me. My only issue is that I have to use a snap swivel or the line twist is crazy. 1 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted August 25, 2019 Super User Posted August 25, 2019 Not a fan of the squirrel tails. I use the plain or tie the same feathers I use on poppers when I want a longer larger profile. I usually cut one point off and fish them as a double hook. I also throw a fluke or the like on the back of them and slow roll them sometimes. Quote
jr231 Posted August 25, 2019 Posted August 25, 2019 I use them with the dressed tail almost exclusively. I have caught pike, bass, bluegill , crappie , and catfish on mepps spinners. Big fan even tho I don't use them much. If I only could choose one artificial lure this would probably be it. 2 Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted August 25, 2019 Super User Posted August 25, 2019 I agree with what seems to be the consensus here; I use them undressed. The ONLY dressed Mepps that seems to get me more fish is the Firetiger double-bladed Aglia in #3. As for single vs. treble hooks, I'd say that single hooks hold fish a lot better, but I feel that I'm missing more hits with them. jj Quote
Super User king fisher Posted August 25, 2019 Super User Posted August 25, 2019 I prefer undressed, single hook, Blue Fox Vibrax over Mepps Aglia, and Panther Martin in faster current. Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted August 25, 2019 Super User Posted August 25, 2019 I prefer the Panther Martin Classic gold undressed in-line spinners with a treble hook. In-line spinners that are dressed always remind me of lures with trebles that have grass snagged on them. Nothing bites those lures but they do bite dressed spinners. It must be a mental block thing with me as I have caught plenty of fish on dressed and undressed lures. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted August 27, 2019 Super User Posted August 27, 2019 I double duty mine salt and fresh i put a tru turn catfish SS hook on mine .....rockfish crappie bass bluefish catfish bass always a 2 or 3 size ....them trebles dressed or undressed rust just looking at them lol Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 27, 2019 Global Moderator Posted August 27, 2019 I do better with the dressed ones, but the hooks tend to rust on me because they're so hard to get them to dry out. Quote
