WdyCrankbait Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Hey everyone, I wanted to see if anyone has fished Buggs Island lately in VA? I am looking for a report, I have a tournament there this Sunday. Thanks for the help, it is greatly appreciated. Wdy Quote
bigbass101 Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 i fish around Virginia i would throw a watermelon green senko and i would also try a swim fluke white and a cavitron buzz bait with a yellowish greenish skirt early in the morning depending on what time the tournament starts. Also i would throw a shallow diving crank-bait along the shore line were there is bush pills and or a creek coming into the lake if theirs little run water spots from someone run off throw the crank-bait been tearing them up like that. 1 Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted May 27, 2014 Author Posted May 27, 2014 BigBass, Thanks for the knowledge I really appericate it a lot! A couple of years ago I popped a 5lber on the first cast there with a DT-6 Helsinki shad similar to how you suggested to fish it so, I am glad that method is still holding true. I was also thinking about throwing a Spook Sexy shad color in the morning. Have you had any success with those there? Thanks again BigBass! Wdy Quote
ThypeBassin Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 Kill em on the spook, keep throwing that for atleast the first hour. Most tournaments this time of year on Buggs island are won on the person that can get them to hit topwater first thing in the morning. It's a tough lake. Have hope in a topwater spook. And if you start fishing shallow and don't get bit, get out deep. Find some good points they're holding on or some ledges. You might only get bit there 5 times a day so make every single bite you get worth it. Best of luck. 1 Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted May 31, 2014 Author Posted May 31, 2014 Thype Thanks, I was thinking about doing that same tatic! I was going to use the Money Dog, I think that is what it is. But, it is the soft plastic stick back that is a Zara Spook, but you just use a 5/0 hook. I figured that would be a different enough change compared to what they might have been seeing. Especially considering there is a Federation tournament today there. Thanks again! Wdy 1 Quote
ThypeBassin Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Let me know how you do, I won a federation tournament on Buggs Island two years ago and got bit six bites the whole day and only capitalized on five and got my limit. First 3 on a River 2 sea rover which is just like a spook. And the other two on a Carolina rig off some ledges. Defiantly got to have your mind set when fishing Buggs island, wish you Good luck and a full live well. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted June 2, 2014 Author Posted June 2, 2014 Thype, Yesterday was a good day of fishing, but I didn't get the size. I caught about 12, mainly on shakey head, Lake Fork Hyper Finesse worm,, green pumpkin on a 3/16" green pumpkin head, and a 5" green pumpkin/watermelon senko. That Lake Fork worm was pretty effective! My boater was using a green pumpkin finesse worm and I would cast to the same place when it came even with the back of the boat and I would get the bite. The senko was on fire to! Watermelon side down. I caught three in 20 yards going down one bank, but again all under 14". I only weighed two because of the size limit there. I did miss two more keepers (on that senko), one when I was on the phone, yes I know, I know. My boater weighed four and probably had 8-9 lb. skipping docks in the afternoon with a green pumpking senko with a "JJ's," tipped tail. I actually caught more then he did, but he caught a larger number of bigger bass. Our winner caught his on C-rig, using a Zoom lizard, I believe Junebug, and second place mainly on Brush hogs, flipping brush, I believe it was a green pumpkin. The winning weight was like 11 lbs. Everyone caught a high number, but little size, I think the biggest bass I saw was like 4lb. then probably 2.5lb. The winner and second place went a different direction and had clear water to fish. We went the other. We launched out of Rudd's creek to give the location. PM me and I can point you in the direction where we fished. But, again nothing to great a size. We maily beat the the banks, trees in the morning then docks in the afternoon. Nothing on crankbaits on anything else, but I did hear of other people catching bass on cranks at the dock. I did use a 1/2oz. sexy shad spook early in the morning and didn't get a strike. Hope that helps! Wdy Quote
