Mikell Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 This is a great things in car companies ya know like ford and lincoln and chevy gmc My question is, I have a quantum smoke and a quantum te hpt100. The smoke is a little noisy 100% functional jus a little buzzy while reeling the line in and im thinkin maybe a gear swap could be a possible fix. They are both 100 models but the TEHPT is a 7:1 and the Smoke is 6.3:1 ratio, would i be able to simply swap the gears out in these 2 reels to see if that fixes the issue or not? Also do you think the handles could be swapped out? Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted May 27, 2014 Super User Posted May 27, 2014 I am not familiar with Quantum reels,so I can't be of help with your other questions but I can tell you this. If you decide to do a gear swap, you need to make sure to swap both gears, pinion, and main gear as a set. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted May 27, 2014 Super User Posted May 27, 2014 as long as the handles are both either straight or swept then yes, they are interchangeable. if not, there are ways to swap the handles but that involves after market parts. i.e different drag star etc. Gears, no idea. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted May 27, 2014 Super User Posted May 27, 2014 Lube it with moly so no wear will occur. Quote
Cgrinder Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 I think it's worth the $20 to send it to Mike at DVT. A lot of things can go wrong when opening a reel. Quote

Yeah i've thought about this especially since i only paid 89 bucks shipped for the smoke reel, ive fished it and it works great jus the noise shouldnt be there IMO with something that just came out not TOO long ago Quote

Also the Smokes came out in 2010(?), so it's perfectly reasonable that your reel could require maintenance. If you do set out to take it apart yourself, get some very good (ideally new) screwdrivers. Stripping a screw is a very real danger. 1 Quote

Stripping a screw is a very real danger. I actually have taken it apart once or twice to see what was makin the noise and to oil it some since it was used. One thing i do notice is the knobs, when you free spin them with your finger or something real fast they make an awful screeching noise, how would i take the knobs off? Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 I can't tell you off the top of my head if those gear sets are interchangeable, but I can tell you that replacing the Smoke gears is a temporary fix. The 'geary" feel is just how they are. It won't hurt anything, but is something some guys just can't tolerate. The best recommendation I can make is to have the reel deep cleaned and properly lubed. As for moly grease, molybdenum disulfide (moly) is an additive used in some greases to enhance it's lubricating properties and load carrying capacity. It's probably overkill for a reel but won't hurt if you want to go that route. Quote
