cjam93 Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Hey guys so the other day I asked yall what a rod I should look into for just wacky rigging. I got a lot of great suggestions, but today when I went to the store I stumbled across a Shimano Compre Dropshot rod. I use the compre crankbait rod already so I knew I liked shimano rods. Anyways I ended up picking that one up as it was 6'9 medium fast, and had a pretty good back bone to it. So I now need some braid for it. What lb test should I get? I will be using it both in shallow water and deep water, sometimes weightless and other times with a weight. I know I want yellow braid to pick up on the bites easier when I am line watching. Also with yellow braid would you say I should get a fluorocarbon leader if I am always in stained water that rarely gets more visibility than a 1-2ft? I have fished green braid for a long time in this water and did fine, but I wasnt sure if the yellow being more visible would matter? Thanks! Quote
Super User Darren. Posted May 26, 2014 Super User Posted May 26, 2014 My preferences... For spinning: Power Pro, 10 pound, yellow + leader of various tests. For casting: Power Pro, 20 lb test, yellow + leader of variou test. Some like other brands like Sufix, Daiwa, etc. I like PP for line diameter, which tends to be smaller than other braids. But the newer stuff offered has newer technology, which may or may not be better/worse. So bottom line, take a pick of what is offered, we here have a LOT of opinions, none of which are 100% right for everyone. 1 Quote
Hogsticker Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Sufix 832 and PP superslick 8 seem to flow and handle best for me on a spinning reel. I use fluoro for weightless plastics though. Quote
bass1980 Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 20lb PP high vis yellow for me. Just this past saturday I was messing around with a leader and without a leader. Fish didn't seem to care if I had a leader or not. I can't say it doesn't matter, but it can't hurt having one. The laziness in me wants to keep testing without a leader though. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted May 27, 2014 Super User Posted May 27, 2014 I love power pro super slick 8, for leaders I usually only tie one on in gin clear water but then again I never use high vis yellow braid I'm always using green... If your not getting bites try the leader and if you all the sudden start getting bit you will have your answer haha Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 27, 2014 Super User Posted May 27, 2014 The only braided line I didn't care for was supercast, which I liked at first until the coating started to crack off. Other than that I don't care, don't see any advantage from 1 major brand to another. I buy what's on sale which is usually PP. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted May 27, 2014 Super User Posted May 27, 2014 I use 40# Daiwa Samurai in the yellow. It is #8 mono equivelent diameter. Quote

Wise words right there. I use spiderwire, but most of the major brands will do fine. If you bought a spinning rod then you can go as low at 10 lb braid, if you bought a casting rod, then 30 or maybe 20 is as low as I would go. 10# braid on a spinning set up is leathal. Quote
