Avalonjohn44 Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I bought a bunch of Rapalas at Gander on sale, but all of them have these idiotic looking Sureset hooks in both red and nickel plated. I hate red hooks as it is, and these feel week and look like they would get the bait hung up, so I am thinking of changing them out. Are they any good? I read on here somewhere (can't find it now...) that they injure the fish. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted March 16, 2011 Super User Posted March 16, 2011 I don't know about injury, but I have a terrible time with those hooks. They never stay sharp and they seem to bend rather easy for me. I replace all of them with Owner, VMC, or Mustad. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 16, 2011 Super User Posted March 16, 2011 If I were overly concerned about harming a fish I wouldn't be fishing in the first place. I have had no problem with the SS hooks, when needed I up the size, I'm not fussy on brand. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I've never had a problem with them either. They come on the Storm Big bass crank baits(one of my favorites) and i caught plenty of fish last year on 'em. Now that i think about it i don't believe i lost a fish on those lures. Quote
shootermcbob Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I think they are much more susceptible to hang-ups, at least in my experience. I replace them and use them on the back of my top water baits. Quote
Gangley Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 they are more susceptable <sp?> to hangups, but generally only on the front hook. I don't have any real issues with them and they have caught plenty of fish for me. If I have lost any fish using suresets, I dont recall when,. However most of the time its improper rod type or line type that causes missed or lost fish with treble hooks. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 17, 2011 Super User Posted March 17, 2011 I don't like them, but they don't suit my style of cranking. They are for guys that like to swing hard on a crankbait bite. I swap them out for VMC Vanadium Inlines or Owner ST-36 hooks. Quote
central.PA.bass Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 I like the ss hooks.. seemed to improve my hookup ratio Quote
bassman31783 Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 I personally don't like them. The get hung up easier, don't stay sharp as long, and bend quite easily. Just not a fan. Quote

Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted March 20, 2011 Super User Posted March 20, 2011 I've killed a ton of fish with these "sure snag hooks" and lost a ton of baits that should have never been hung up. Watch what happens when a bass takes these deep once or when the go spastic with the bait hanging on the outside of their face. The chances for mortal gill wounds is very high. These hooks also have a bad habit of snapping and breaking after they get bent once or twice from wrestling them out of gill tissue and the backs of throats. In other words I absolutely detest them! Sorry if anyone wants to bash my opinion, but if you use them then good luck you will start learning soon enough. Quote
SausageFingers23 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 and bend quite easily. Just not a fan. I was thinking this as well. I havent had a chance to throw the bait I have with the sure set hooks yet but it does look like it has the potential to bend easy. I might just swap them out to avoid finding out the hard way. Quote
BassThumb Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 ss hooks.. seemed to improve my hookup ratio I've noticed this too. In fact, they hook EVERYTHING they touch. Fish, snags, etc. "Sure Snags." ;D I still use them sometimes as the back hook on the Rapala cranks that come with them. Snags aren't really an issue when they're on the back, and you'll be still be able to hook a few of those pocket picking fish. They do bend and break pretty easily, and they're not terribly sharp. I'd give them a D+. Quote
