OK Bass Hunter Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Bought a Conquest 250 DC to throw 1 to 3 ounce baits like the 3:16 Rising Son and other line thru swimbaits. Now I need a rod to pair with the reel. Looking for recommendations from the more experienced. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted May 25, 2014 Super User Posted May 25, 2014 What kind of price range are you looking at? Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted May 25, 2014 Super User Posted May 25, 2014 I really like the Dobyns Champion Swimbait rods. The 795ML would probably work well for what you're wanting it for. Best thing is, BTD has them 25% off right now. Can't beat that with a stick. 1 Quote
2833-34497 Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 I'd recommend getting a Dobyns 806 IMO because it can throw what you're planning on and you'll want to throw bigger before you know it, so you'll have a rod that can do that also! I throw 2.0 oz 68 Hudds, 178 S-wavers and like stuff all the time on the 806 and it's sweet, and if I want to go to a 4.5 oz 8" Hudd or 8" Savage Gear Line Thru I do that also!! 1 Quote

Can't beat that with a stick. this rod is absolutely insane. i picked it up a month ago and it went straight to my top 3 rods. has the perfect tip to cast a 1-3oz lures a mile yet doesn't backlash, plenty of backbone, a longer handle for the perfect casting fulcrum point i wish all rods had and to boot it's as light as a feather. you'd swear you have a 7' rod in your hands. doubles as a nice A rig rod too. i'm about to pick up a 805cbrm for deep cranking and i can only hope it's half as nice. 1 Quote
OK Bass Hunter Posted May 26, 2014 Author Posted May 26, 2014 I looked at LDC and was kinda scared of by the lack of communication others have reported. This will not be my only rig. I plan on getting a bigger reel and a heavier rod too. I am going to look long and hard at the Dobyns. Everywhere I've looked over the last 3 years, the Mike Long swimbait rod keeps coming up. Quote
2833-34497 Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Everywhere I've looked over the last 3 years, the Mike Long swimbait rod keeps coming up. Just something to consider when getting a rod. The longer handle is nice unless you fishing from a kayak like I do, then the regular handle is nicer then the Mike Long handle. Someone mentioned it to me and it helped me make a choice that fit my fishing platform which is kayak fishing. Someone else I know went out and bought a Dobyns 867 and while he loves the rod for fishing from the bank, he doesn't like the longer handle when he comes in one of my kayaks with me, so he ends up using his 806 more. So when picking handles length etc just take under consideration your fishing platform so your happy, because it was good advice someone gave me I'd like to keep passing it on!! Quote

Super User NorcalBassin Posted May 26, 2014 Super User Posted May 26, 2014 I have the "standard" Dobyns 795 (shorter handle so you can also work magnum topwaters). Haven't tried the others but after doing a lot of research it's the one I decided to go with and I've been very pleased. Great rod. Quote
OK Bass Hunter Posted May 26, 2014 Author Posted May 26, 2014 I do a lot of my fishing from the bank so the longer handle will be a plus for me. Quote
hatrix Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 LDC Production MH - That is if you can wait for it to be built Jeff Hey! That's what I use How did you know?!?! I tell people on here this ^^ but I think it gets ignored. Maybe because a mod recommended it now they might get more attention from up and coming big bait throwers. These rods really can't be beat. Right now there are on sale for only $200. You can go over and under these rods rating all day too with no problem. Just a FYI I guess I will add in a LDC M/H rated 1-5 can throw 1/2oz to 7oz all day. If you really are throwing heavier stuff a ton I would eventually get a heavy but the M/H can handle a huge range of baits. Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 26, 2014 Super User Posted May 26, 2014 7'11" MH, G. Loomis Swimbait rod should work for you. Tom Quote
