Muskies are predators, so like any other predator fish, if you can find their food they won't be far away. They like weed edges, rockpiles, pole timber, funnel areas, any where they can hide and ambush their prey.

Bucktails are probably the best starter bait. They're easy to fish and probably boat more muskies than anything else year in and year out. Muskies grow huge, especially where you're at, so you're going to have to buy some quality gear to chase them. I'd suggest a reel like a 400 Calcutta with 80lb braid and a high quality titanium leader. Rod will just depend what you like. I don't get to chase them often since the closest body of water with muskie is 3 hours away, but I have a 7' Fenwick Techna AV H/F that has suited me very well for tossing bucktails. St.Croix makes a great muskie rod that's very affordable also.

As with all fish it's spinning for me.  Living on lake St Clair I caught my share of muskie.  Fast forwarding to present day I would fish heavier for them now, I would want those fish to be landed as quick as possible.  Muskie do not have the stamina to withstand very long battles, I would not want to risk them going belly up.

We catch em on jerkbaits fishing for bass. The most important part is a lake with a healthy population of muskies. You fish a lake where one or two come out of it a year, dont expect much.

Go to Over Stocked Bait & Tackle. They offer plenty of Muskie and Pike lures.

I will give you a very well kept secret to fishing for Muskie

Find a Lake /w Muskie

Buy an assortment of Lucky Craft pointers for said body of water that matches the local forage

Don't target Muskie. Go jerkbait fishing for bass.

A lure that's overlooked by many guys that target musky is a spoon. On CastleRock in WI, a 5 of Diamonds and Daredevils consistantly produce............. Oh yea, and buctails
