fisherrw Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 I have narrowed my opinions on a cranking reel down to a diawa tatula or lews tournament mg. I can get them for both around 100 dollars on ebay, which should i get? Quote
Jd_Phillips_Fishin Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 No doubt the tournament mg. If you ask me it beats any Revo, Tatula, Quntum, Shimano, or any other reel. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted May 24, 2014 Super User Posted May 24, 2014 ^^^ can I ask how much actual experience you have with any of these reels, seeing that you are only 14. Secondly the mg is not that good of a reel to make such a bold statement. To the OP - I'd pick the Daiwa but make sure you are okay with it's size. It's a larger framed reel. Not everyone likes it's size. I own 2 and I'm very impressed with them. Has a real positive feeling when you press the thumb bar and when you engage the spool after the cast. It's super smooth on the retrieve also. It's also a great caster. I was averaging 115ft throwing a 4.8 keitech with a 1/16 weighted gamakatsu 3/0 hook. If you are set on Lews get the tournament speed spool or tournament pro if the budget allows it. Those two are where their reels start to get nice to me. I've owned a total of 10 Lews reels. Those were my favorites out of them all. The $99 speed spool was ok for what it was but the others feel more refined. The TP is a great reel at $150. Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 I agree, the Tatula is a bigger reel, but it is high quality stuff. The MG is decent, but i would take a Tatula over it any day Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted May 24, 2014 Super User Posted May 24, 2014 The MG is a magnetic brake reel, this would not make it my first choice for long distance casting. The Tatula and the Magforce Z braking system would perform better IMO. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted May 24, 2014 Super User Posted May 24, 2014 I've used both. Tatula hands down Quote
Longlivenyy Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I'd take the Tatula over any reel in that price category! Quote
fisherrw Posted May 25, 2014 Author Posted May 25, 2014 Responding to rippin lips- I have owned a quantum accurist and just recently bought a lews bb1 pro in 7:1.1 I have had a decent amount of experience in bass fishing( I fish all summer long and whenever I'm not in school). I now need to buy a cranking reel as I said in the post. Thanks for your advice!! Quote
papajoe222 Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I own both and for cranking the Lews TS1SMG is my choice. Longer handle, bigger paddles and the lower retrieve ratio = a reel that was made for cranking. The only thing my Tatula has over it is casting distance, but I've yet to really dial in my Lews. Quote

The only person that will really know which one to choose is you. See which one feels the best in your hand and go fishing. Don't second guess yourself just enjoy it. Quote

X2, with the dual braking and smaller profile than the Tatula, this becomes a real decision, the MG is a good reel, I just don't think it competes favorably with the Tatula with only the mag braking. Smallmouth Hunter Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Tatula is my preference over any lew's tourney MG. Tatula has a dynamic magnetic braking system whereas the MG has a linear. In the tatula, the braking force tapers down throughout the cast so at the end of the cast, very little force is put on the spool. This maximizes distance. With the MG, the braking system is linear meaning the brakes are in a line in the sideplate, and they don't move at all. The same braking force is applied at the beginning and end of the cast. This will reduce your distance a lot. I have used Lew's reels, and I hated them. Most finicky reels I have ever used. If you are planning on using fluoro, I'd stay away from Lew's reels. The tatula can easily handle stiffer fluoro lines. Quote
livetofish28 Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Another option you have is to go cheaper and pick up a pro qualifier from bass pro shops. I got three of mine for 79 i believe if not cheaper and then you have an extra 30 bucks to spend on lures line etc. I don't own any diawa's but really like my Lew's mg and super duty. the pro will be my next reel tight lines Andrew Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted May 25, 2014 Super User Posted May 25, 2014 Tatula of you're choices...... No doubt Quote

And no, I wasnt using a spinning reel. And if you ask me the tourament mg is alot smoother than the Tatula. JMO Quote

jhoffman Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I have an mg and love it, bought it for crankn. I would buy another tomorrow if something happened. That reel has only ever backlashed on me one time with very little braking and in a very strong wind. Other than that one incident it has been flawless. Im not a fan of any dual brake systems I have encountered to this point so for me its either pick mags, pins or external adjustable centrifugals. Id not be afraid to say that I bet a lot of people have never put a day on a lews and didnt like it. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted May 25, 2014 Super User Posted May 25, 2014 I see fan boys of both. I've bought both. I prefer the tatula. Go to a store and try out how they feel. Quote

Because honestly it's not possible with that reel. Heck it's not possibly with a lot of higher end reels. 1 Quote
LMB KING Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 if theirs any reel that can cast 40 yards between the two, i would have to say the tatula because it was made for casting far with the (T-WING) system. Quote
