Lews Super Duty For Big Swimbaits?

I'd like to use a lews super duty for flipping and swimbaits like hudds and spros. Are these to heavy for this reel?

I've been using the Lew's Super Duty (5.4:1, 6.4:1 and 7.1:1 gear ratios) for 8 months now with P-Line 25 lb test on all my swimbaits up to 8" Hudds which run ~4.5 oz. depending on ROF and 9" MS Slammers which are lighter than Hudds with no problems. I was told by a Lew's manger they could handle up to 6 oz. but I don't have any swimbaits that heavy! The only thing is I think for heavier than what I'm throwin is I'd like a little more line capacity due to needing to retying even more often to prevent castoffs.

I have mine mounted on my swimbait stick and have thrown 5oz A-rigs on it with no problem at all. I would say cast away

That's been my Muskie and Northern Pike reel for better than a year now. I throw 1.5 to 3 oz bucktails mostly with it as my hands are ate up with sever arthritis and throwing some of my 11 1/2" 7 to 8 oz hard baits is becoming harder to do these days, but the reel handle more than I can of them. With 50lbs 832 this thing is beast,,,,,,I even used it last fall to land one of these brutes, the drag is getting a little anemic for them, but using the rod to add pressure was all it needed to get the job done. 

    I am sure it will take anything you can throw with it and put a smile on your face for many moons to come. In all my life it was the smallest and lightest reel I have ever trusted for Salmon in the Manistee River, quite a task!

If you ask me it may work but it is far from ideal. I have tried it and can d**n near spool the thing with any bait over 2 oz., especially if the wind is to my back. Something else you have to remember that a lot of people don't consider, is because it does have such a small line cap, on the end of your cast you will be reeling in several inches of line per turn less than say 10ft out, so you will have to start fast and slow down to keep a steady retrieve.

With a 160 yards of 30# braid capacity I would have to doubt your claim of even coming close to spooling a Super Duty on a cast. As great as it cast we have to be realistic here, even if you used 50#!! Like I said mine is spooled with 50#  Sufix 832, and I got over 130 yards on it, tied directly to the Braid Ready Spool, I wanna see David Fritz spool that. Take it for what it is worth, in reality no other Baicaster this size is more up to the task!!! But with a testimonial like this what other real will cast over 100 yards?????????????

With 30# and 50# braid you are absolutely right. But 30# and 50# braid is a very far cry from swimbait line.

I was wondering the same thing given the price of the GX3 super duty compared to some of the well know low profile swimbait reels is a lot more reasonable. I decided to pick one up from TW and have been using it for about a year and a half now and let me tell you this reel could probably handle twice what it’s rated for I’ve throw 8-10inch huds, 1 1/2 oz jigs, big 5 oz cover glides and caught plently of 4-8 pounders and this reel handles it like a dream. The only downside is you knock the line clicker switch when casting every once in a while and give everyone around you a scare lol. Tight line everyone!
