Super User tcbass Posted May 23, 2014 Super User Posted May 23, 2014 Both, but you can't use poppers in the weeds. Unless it's a popper frog. 1 Quote
Preytorien Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Frog in the weeds Popper in open water Some frog brands have partially covered both bases by making a popping hollow bodied frog. It's my go-to topwater (when a buzzbait won't do) Check em' out. I personally like the Spro Bronzeye Popper, great bait in my opinion. Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted May 23, 2014 Super User Posted May 23, 2014 For me it's frog over everything. Pop'r have their times though, my third biggest fish came on a pop'r at the end of 2013 for a week straight me and my buddies were tearing em up at this one spot we all set our PB within days of eachother all on a pop'r. Booyah makes a poppin frog and so does River2Sea, check them out they can e very effective. Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted May 23, 2014 Super User Posted May 23, 2014 I prefer poppers when weed conditions allow. I probably get fewer strikes, than when using a frog, but more hook-ups. Besides, that popping is so cool. Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted May 23, 2014 Super User Posted May 23, 2014 frogs > everything else Quote
ShimanoDobynsGuy Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Both.. popper frogs as well.. Love top water who doesn't.. Quote
Mr Swim Jig Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Have both, use both but I prefer a frog. I picked up some of the popper frogs to try. Quote
stiko97 Posted May 23, 2014 Author Posted May 23, 2014 Well, to all their own. But does anyone ever fish frogs in open water? Koppers in particular Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted May 23, 2014 Super User Posted May 23, 2014 I use pop r the most... Ribbits T rigged on and along the bottom, also as a jig trailer... But in pads or hydrilla beds... Yea walking a frog is the way to go.... Quote
David D. Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 I use both hollow body frogs (and popping frogs) and pop'r lures and like each; though I prefer the frogs. However, I recently starting using Soft plastic frogs like the Ribbit, Zoom Horny Toad, etc. and have really enjoyed fishing them along the top. A quick enough retrieve to keep the frogs on top of the water leads to bass just smashing them to avoid having dinner get away. Quote
TJwaterson Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 To me, frog is just for heavy vegetation. A heavy braid + frog is my go-to combo for the situation. Poppers are just a lot of fun to work with. There are just so many choice, I wish I could try them all. They catch me more than the fish. lol Quote
Topwaterspook Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Wayne, you may want to check out Mann's Sizemic Toads. I use these a lot over matted vegetation later in the summer. There are two colors that float, White and Southern Toad. Texas rigged, these baits can be just the ticket in heavy weeds. The nice part is that you can stop it in holes in the mat and they won't sink. Quote

A lot of times you will catch fish on the sink too. Quote
sparky241 Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Mostly I've liked frogs better, poppers seem to be too lite for 8lb line. They make it coil up and tangle Quote
mmrivera86 Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Definitely prefer frogs. Although, I absolutely love me some double props. Quote
hatrix Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I throw spooks over poppers. They cover water better then a popper and get more bites for me because i can keep moving. Poppers are light and are a spinning thing throwing little poppers up close to areas doing a bunch or pops but not moving to far. Quote
grumpydog Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 A couple of years ago I inherited my Dads tackle box, found several Hula Poppers that, after replacing the skirts, have caught some great bass. They give a real honest to goodness blurking noise that seems to irritate the fish to no end. Its hard to beat a noisy lure in open water. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted May 29, 2014 Super User Posted May 29, 2014 Spro popping frog does both. Quote
