Hey all, I live in Atlanta and am starting to get back into fishing. I fished every year we go to St George with my kayak, catch sea trout and reds, etc.

I lost all my fresh water tackle so looking to get setup again. I don't really know much about good brands or reliable reels or anything so hooping someone can point me in the right direction for a decent setup for bass/trout.

Thanks!

Oh yeah, and by budget, I mean I'd like to spend under $200 for a setup.

Well first check this out (very helpful for someone trying to get the basics down)

And then check out the Flea Market section of the forums to possibly save yourself a few bucks.

If I had to put something together for that price though, I'd probably get a 6'10" M/F *** Black spinning rod and either a Sahara or a Supreme MGX.

For a rod take a look at the Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth series....especially the 6'9" MXF model.  A President 6930 with 8# mono or braid of your choice should make a very, very nice combo.

Take a look at the shimano zeles combo! I ordered one while it was on sale for 70$ and it was a complete steal. I love it and still use it. The rod and reel are both great, but the MH fast action rod it comes with is one of my favorite rods.

I'm not going to recommend any brands but instead give you an idea of power and action. A lot depends on the trout you are chasing, in my neck of the woods in means 10" to 14" stockers that you end up using ultra light set ups for. If that is the kind of trout you are after then I can't do much in helping as the only thing that will be good enogh for bass and trout is a medium light and it still is going to over power the trout. Get yourself a medium to medium light spinning rod, 6' to 7' in length and a 1000 or 2000 size spinning reel with 6lb test, it will be light for bass but heavy for trout.

Why heavy for trout ?

In my neck of the woods high in the sierra there´s rainbow trout and man there´s some huge fish up there. 6 lbs test would be a lot of fun and "sporty".

If you are targeting seatrout, redfish and LMB, then get a ugly stik GX2 7' model USSP701MH $40. with the Okuma Avenger 40b size spinning reel $40. 20 pound powerpro. All this will cost 100 bucks and will outlast other 300+ range combos. good luck

If you go back and re-read my post, you will notice I said that it depends on the kind of trout he is after, in my state most of the trout you fish for are small stockers with the occasional 20" fish but most fall around 10" or so. If that is the case for the OP then the set up will end up being a little heavy for trout as a light or extra light would be more appropriate.

As a college student cheap is my middle name...or ought to be. But I have heard wonderful things on the new Mitchell 300 Pro reel and the combo both, all at a whopping $90. Other than that I shop the bargin areas at Bass Pro and Cabelas since they are the outdoor shops near me.I have found all kinds of gear at dirt cheap prices, its just a matter of sniffing them out.

I 100% agree.  When I hear bass/trout I'd want to fish light.  When that bigger fish does comes along, that's game on and exactly what I'm to hoping to happen.  I've been doing nothing but peacock fishing (as far as my freshwater angling), they can get feisty.  I've been using a ml 6'6 rod with a size 30 reel and it's been working very well.  I really have been fishing heavier than I want, just haven't taken the rod out of the car in a week.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Going to try and hit up Wally World tonight and see if I can find something decent from the suggestions here.

Can someone also give me a guide as to basic hook size for trout/small mouth bass, staple lures, technique etc. I'll keep browsing this site in the meantime.

For soft plastic lures ill use a 3/0 worm hook, for live bait i only use 2/0 circle hook
