nocellcontracts Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 I have a 200yd. spool of Invizx. I would like to put 100yd. on each of 2 reels. As you know, 100 yds. isn't enough to fill the spool, so is it OK to use a cheap backing of mono in the inner spool? Does it affect casting distances in any way? Thanks! Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted May 22, 2014 Super User Posted May 22, 2014 Cheap Mono makes perfect backing. If your setting up for finesse fishing you may want to experiment with using some old braid as backing. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted May 22, 2014 Super User Posted May 22, 2014 Yes it is. I have an old spool of line I got 10 years ago that I use as backing. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted May 22, 2014 Super User Posted May 22, 2014 Yes it's fine. Try using 65 yards instead of 100 on each reel. You get more "top shots" of line and 65 yds of line is a lot more than you think on a reel. It should last a while. Quote

Do you mean put more mono on the inner spool so that the spool is full with only 65yds. of fluoro on top of the mono? I'm not following you on "top shots". Explain please. Quote

"Top shot" is the line that you are using joined at the backing. i.e Mono is the backiing and InvizX is the top shot. Quote

Are you saying my casting distance will be further with 65yds. vs. 100yds. of fluoro? How's that??? Quote

What he is telling you is that instead of using 100 yards and being able to fill twice, use 65 yards and get three fills from the same spool. 2 Quote

JGBassinAL Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 and that it is very hard to cast 65 yards so you don't need any more than that much fluoro on your reel. 1 Quote

TrippyJai Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 When I buy 150 yard spools of braid, I use it for 2 reels. 75 yards each is more than enough. I never make super long casts with braid, usually flipping or targets. 100 yards will be fine even if you need to make a super long cast on a crankbait. Quote
