stiko97 Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 What # braid should I put on this reel? Should I fill some of it with mono first? And then tie the braid to the mono and continue spooling? I've only put braid on this reel once and it was 50# braid I believe, and I filled the spool up with just the braid and had tons of problems while casting. I want to do some top water fishing. Quote

I have a Revo SX and it is spooled with braid. I starters with super slick power pro then ran out of line, thought I had more than I did, so I tied regular power pro to it and continued to spool. You do not need a mono backing when using braid on a baitcast, to my understanding. One thing I would say is to take off some line don't fill the spool. I had problems with mine when I first put braid on it and my buddy told me it was due to too much line on the reel. Took some off and never had a problem ever since. I have 30# on mine but I am going to switch to 50 next time I need to respool (haven't had any problems with 30# yet though) Quote
Super User Solution Felix77 Posted May 21, 2014 Super User Solution Posted May 21, 2014 Unless the spool is designed for no backing I would always put a backing on before putting the Braid on. The Black Max is the same as my Pro and Silvers in that their spool is not designed for braid. So I would recommend a little backing of Mono before filling the rest with braid. Without it you will feel like the line is slipping. You will think it's your drag or something wrong with your reel when it's caused by the braid not being able to hold on to the spool when reeling against a good fish. Not that had ever happened to me ... Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted May 21, 2014 Super User Posted May 21, 2014 ... another side note ... when spooling it up make sure it is being packed in tightly. Otherwise you are asking for more trouble. Again ... so I heard. 40lb Braid min for baitcasters for me. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 You need some backing or tape the braid so it doesn't slip which gives the illusion of the drag slipping. There's no need to fill a spool with expensive braid that will never see the light of day imo but it's your choice. Quote

Again ... so I heard. 40lb Braid min for baitcasters for me. When you say tightly, you mean to add a lot of pressure while spooling the braid? I just put 50# on my Black Max with a good amount of mono backing. I put decent pressure on the line while spooling but not a ridiculous amount.. Wouldn't too much pressure cause biting? Because the power pro I just put on is biting into itself quite a bit without a ton of pressure, but not enough to cause problems for me (I don't think). So whether I messed it up or not, I still have enough braid to spool the reel again.. But either way I'll probably start off with my brake all the way up just to get a feel for everything and then work my way down to a comfortable spot like we all did while learning how to use a baitcaster.
