Arv Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/130634-rod-selection-the-basics/ This is a solid place to start. If I am bank fishing I usually only carry 2-3 set ups and it really depends on where I am going. Smaller ponds, I bring lighter gear. Lakes and rivers where I will be fishing heavier cover, I bring heavier gear. Quote
Pz3 Posted May 20, 2014 Author Posted May 20, 2014 Good thread but im looking for the exact setups. What rod What reel What line For what purpose. I was thinking. About this lately for a kayak im going to be buying. Figured i need Flip pitch punch rig Standard casting fineese rig 1 Quote
Super User MCS Posted May 20, 2014 Super User Posted May 20, 2014 Yeah man that list aint gonna cut it down here. I would roll with a MH and a Heavy casting setups and a MH spinning setup. atleast. Here bank fishing in FL I personally would run a Dobyns champion 734C with a 7.0 ratio or higher reel for spinnerbaits, lipless, light t-rigs and jigs a Dobyns champion 735C with a 7.0 ratio or higher reel for heavy or deep trigs, frogs, heavier jigs and light flip/pitch (you aint getting into really thick stuff from the bank) a 6'-6" MH Carbonlite spinning rod with a 25-35 size reel for weightless stuff like flukes(I throw senkos on the 734) trick worms, and I like to throw my EZ style swimbaits on a spinning gear, also tight quarters a stout spinning rod helps. you can get away with topwater on the 734 or the carbonlite and cranks on the carbonlite. Reel brand really don't matter much, if you go Daiwa, Lews, Abu, Shimano, Pflueger or Quantum(like the smoke or energy) you will be in good shape. Spinning same brands, I used all brands except Lews and Shimano and they are all just prefrence once you get into the $150 range for a baitcaster or close the the $100 range for a spinning reel 1 Quote
Arv Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 Dobyns DX 744c, Lews TP 7.1:1, 50# braid (leader optional) - jigs, soft plastics, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, senkos, Fat Ika's, toads Dobyns DX 742c, Lews TP 7.1:1, 30# braid (leader optional) - jigs, shakey heads, senkos, texas rigs, rage rigs maybe a lipless crank if I don't have my cranking rod Dobyns DX 742sf, Daiwa Tierra 2500, 20# braid (leader optional) - shakey head/wacky worms, flick-shake, drop shot, tubes Dobyns Champion 705cb (graphite) Lews TP 6.4:1, 30# braid (leader optional) - treble hook lures Another medium power spinning rod, my wife just broke my 6'8 Cumara A spinning rod so I'm looking at a DX/Champion 703sf, Daiwa Tierra 2000, 15# braid (leader optional) - weightless plastics, jigs, shakey heads, texas rigs I normally wouldn't write all that out but I'm really trying to avoid studying for finals. Don't know if that's helpful, but its what I use. I fish out of a kayak as well. 1 Quote

Super User Tywithay Posted May 20, 2014 Super User Posted May 20, 2014 Mine would be: 7'4" H ALX Dragger custom- Antares HG w/ 14lb Toray Super Polyamide Plus 7'1" MH ALX Deputy Custom - Daiwa Tatula Type R R100H w/ 15lb Tatsu 6'10" M Expride - Daiwa SS SV 103SH w/ 12lb Sunline Shooter Green With those 3, there's literally nothing I couldn't cover. They may not do everything as well as some of my other specific-type rods, but they'll do it well enough. When I go out walking banks or wading, I only take one rod with me 7' MH Kistler Helium3 - Shimano Antares 5.6 - I like the slower retrieve for all-around stuff. Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 7' ML St croix Avid spinning rod w/ Daiwa Ballistic 2500 spinning reel and 10lb 832 braid for dropshots, shaky heads and cranks. 6'6" M St croix Avid spinning rod w/ Pflueger Supreme XT spinning reel and 12lb Sunline Super FC Sniper for tubes, grubs, T rigs and small jigs. 6'8'' MH St Croix LTB casting rod w/ Shimano Chronarch CI4+ 151HG 7.6:1 casting reel and 16lb Super FC for the heavier stuff like jigs, carolina rigs and bigger T rigs, If i had to pick 1, it would be the ML Avid Quote
Super User bigbill Posted May 21, 2014 Super User Posted May 21, 2014 You pick the brands and sizes. 1. Topwater setup. Hvy/med action. 2. Crankbait setup. Medium action. (Med to larger cranks) 3. Plastics setup. Medium action. (Carolina rigs, split shot rig , jigs etc.) 4. Spinnerbaits & inline spinners. 5. Small Bait setup. Light/med action. (For using mini, micro, light baits) I'm the knucklehead that carries five rods for shore fishing. Quote

Super User bigbill Posted May 21, 2014 Super User Posted May 21, 2014 Topwater & crankbait rods can be combined. You still need a jig rod.I run heavier line on my topwater setup do to shore fishing.I use a lighter line test for cranks because I believe the heavier line effects the depth and limits the action of the cranks. When I went with a heavier line the bite changed right away. I'm fishing small bodies of water. The 6lb and 8lb test is my limit with cranks. My topwater and plastics I use heavier line. I could probably go with a lighter test leader for cranks and use a heavier test line but it's a weak link with the lesser leader anyway when we get into or near weeds. I think the rules change between shore fishing and boat fishing when it comes to what line test we use. Otherwise there isn't much difference. I think the lighter line test makes a smaller foot print in the smaller unpressured places. At the same time were all different and use what we like that works for us. It's all about success and it's a journey and learning experience all the way that never ends. I wonder how many of us have piles of equipment we didn't like. We still used them but not often. Quote
Mikell Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 Bank fishing in florida you can actually get into pretty thick stuff! My setups are 7'3 MH Duckett Ghost Dobyns 734c Champ 7'3 MF *** Black and whenever i breakdown to ship it in for warranty replacement, Im probably goin to switch the *** for my St. Croix LTB 7'MF Teaser rod Reels would be Pinnacle optimus xihs I have 2 of these with braid and then a plueger patriarch, the new one, which will most likely also have braid or will get some 12lb invisx on it Quote
