Super User Jigfishn10 Posted May 18, 2014 Super User Posted May 18, 2014 Well my son's little league has been less than bad this year - the boys haven't won a game yet and we have 4 games left. The coach is not very supportive of the kids and is a habitual offender of cancelling practice and a frequent absentee of games. Today was picture day and the coach notified all that he would not be able to attend, unfortuanltely he did not give the sponsor banner to the assistant coach which had the advertisement and every kid's name on the banner and it really got the league a little P.O'd to say the least. The VP of the league had been contacting parents about the coach as well as his peer coaches and I guess it was unaminous, our coach has been relieved of his duties. My problem is, I was recommended by some parents to coach the rest of the way, which is awesome, I love baseball and coaching kids, but it just doesn't look right in my eyes, especially to the folks who are loyal to the original coach. Your thoughts? Quote
stk Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 The original coach made his own bed by not following through on his responsibilities. If you have the time and want to give it a try then do it. The kids have nothing to lose and everything to gain if you give them the time they deserve. I say go for it. 4 Quote

EvanT123 Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Go for it!! It's not like you directly gave him the boot. The other coach should have realized what he was in for when he signed up. If his work/personal life was to hectic for coaching it was his bad decision and the kids shouldn't have to suffer from it. 1 Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted May 18, 2014 Super User Posted May 18, 2014 Give em hell son. Forget what the other parents say. Those kids deserve better than what they were getting. 2 Quote

Your thoughts? Obviously those folks are in minority. If they or the original coach has a problem with it then, well, he should be blaming the league and parents that had a problem with it! And, if he still can't get it, then asked him what about all those times he had to miss practices and team photo day? Seem clear cut to me based on what you said. If you can't follow through with attending practices and photo day, don't bother trying to coach little league baseball... Plain and simple. 1 Quote

I hear ya Root, but politics in these sports gets ridiculus. My son missed the first 2 games this year cause he played for this coach last year and didn't want to play for him again. We're talking about 8 yo last year and 9 yo this year and kids are supposed to play all over the field, bat every where in the lineup and what happens, kid get buried in the outfield picking grass and dandy lions, some kids hit the crap outta the ball only to bat nineth and get skipped in the lineup so the the inner circle parents kids get more at bats and infield/fielding ops. I'm telling Root, I was a hellion growing up and loved to party, but I never puked in my mouth more until I witnessd this sorry scene. Quote

Super User MCS Posted May 19, 2014 Super User Posted May 19, 2014 It's about the kids jig and if you are the recommended man for the job take it guilt free. Sounds like this dude shouldn't have been the coach from the begging. Good luck and enjoy buddy. 1 Quote
Brian6428 Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Make sure to study up on some Coach Kent Murphy. Easily the most knowledgeable baseball coach on youtube (just don't watch with kids in the room). 1 Quote

Super User WIGuide Posted May 19, 2014 Super User Posted May 19, 2014 If he was unanimously voted out by the league, then one person can't be behind it. The kids need someone to coach the rest of the way so it might as well be someone who actually wants to do it so go for it! 1 Quote

Super User Fishing Rhino Posted May 19, 2014 Super User Posted May 19, 2014 The most important thing any coach in a kids' league is to teach them responsibility. How to play should be secondary. The now ex coach failed miserably at teaching fulfilling one's life commitments. It's a good life lesson that if someone shirks their responsibility, they will be replaced. A coach should show the kids that he/she is with them, through thick and thin. My guess would be that if the team had been winning, the coach would be there to bask in the glory. But, since they weren't, he had better things to do. I may be wrong, but that is what the kids will see, and that's the important thing. Quote

Maico1 Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 With all due respect this is not about you it is about the kids.Your name would not of come to the surface unless other parents thought you would be the right fit for the kids.A good coach leads by example and I am sure that is what they see in you. I say go for it and do not look back as I think you would do an excellent job.It is obvious that coach was about himself not the young ones who he decided to leave behind... 2 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted May 19, 2014 Super User Posted May 19, 2014 Do it for the kids. It sounds like everyone is in agreement that the first coach is only a coach when it is convenient for him to do so. 1 Quote

It's all good with me. You're a respected member here and your opinion is always welcomed. Well, the kids are playing tonight and I'll be helping them out the best I can. If we can go 2 - 2 in the last 4 games, then I think we can restore some confidence back into the kids. Wish us luck, we'll need it! Quote
