Super User David P Posted April 11, 2007 Super User Posted April 11, 2007 I've been using plastic craws, jigs with craw trail, and other things.. I just learned about the Hula Grubs and saw some guy fishing one today and it looked great.. Anyone use them ? If so , when? Water Condition, Deep or Shallow, cold warm water? Color wise what do you go with ? I'm leaning toward the same colors as my Senkos .. Quote
Super User David P Posted April 11, 2007 Author Super User Posted April 11, 2007 What size Hula Grub do you use, and what oz jig? That sounds like a good idea. Do you ever fish just the Hula Grub? Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted April 11, 2007 Super User Posted April 11, 2007 I am not sure on the sizes, but I think I have them from 3" all the way up to 5". I have had various brands .... Chompers, YUM, GYCB, etc. Don't really have a favorite. I use jigs from 1/8 oz up to 1 oz. I use the hula grubs on them all. I don't think I have ever thrown them alone. No reason. It's just if I had the option to rig them on a jig or use them alone, I would always pick the jig. I like bulkier baits. Quote
Fish Man Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 im like u i just started using them. but i asked a man at gander mtn how to rig/fish it an he said to rig it with a 3/0 EWG hook.anyone know if this works Quote

I've never caught much on jigs =\ Probably just don't give it enough time to work, but I always go to what I feel best with, and that's a Trig plastic worm. So I figured this would be in between (sorta). Maybe I'll go rent a Jig fishing video and use the Hula with a jig. Quote
jomatty Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 you can rig em on a ewg hook with a bullet sinker but i think the best way is on a jig head. i like to rig em on a football head/or just about any other head and fish them with long slow hops. good smallie bait around here. i let water clarity be my guide as far as colors go. matt Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 11, 2007 Super User Posted April 11, 2007 I fish the GYCB Single Tail Hula Grub as an alternative to the 3 1/2" Mizmo tube targeting smallmouth. In open water I fish an exposed hook, jighead. Otherwise, T-rigged with a 1/8 oz bullet or barrel weight, with a bead and unpegged. Quote
patbfishing123 Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 A Hula Grub is a great lure and very versitile. It is like a jig and most times is what I use as a trailer on my jigs. But i have also taken the skirt of a jig and put just a Hula Grub on the jig head. Pretty much anywhere and any presentation that you would use for jig (flipping, pitching, jigging, swimming...ect) (in logs, thick mats of weeds, any structure really) these are the areas that you will catch fish with the hula grub. I have had a lot of luck with more of the greener colors, but I am fisihing in minorly stained water. I hope this helps. Good luck Pat Quote
Tucson Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 A very versatile bait either as a trailer or main course. I started out using the smaller ones on a ball-head jig (1/8 or 1/4 oz) just swimming them back, then tried the larger ones on a relatively heavy (1/2 oz) football jig for an entirely different presentation. With the football jig I drag them along the bottom with frequent pauses to let the skirt "work". Dbl tail hula grubs and senkos are my favorite baits. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted April 12, 2007 Super User Posted April 12, 2007 AT, nice write-up. You've convinced me to dig some out long term storage, ( the junk box in the garage ) and give "em another go. I used to use these quite a bit. I remember having pretty decent results t-rigging, with a pegged weight, swimming it along, just above the bottom. Thanks for the informative review. Cheers, GK By the way, aren't you one of our guys who went overseas last year? Welcome home, if that's the case. If not, well you know what they say; memory is the second thing to go, I think. I forgot waht the first was. G Quote
Super User David P Posted April 12, 2007 Author Super User Posted April 12, 2007 So I went and got some Hula Grubs, Caught my first bass on one today! Not too big, maybe pound and half. I was fishing it on a C-Rig just fishing it pretty similar to how I fish plastic worms.. Any tips on jig fishing? I've never caught, nor spent much time using a jig head and any jig for that matter due to I really dont' feel too confident. What tips / retrievals would you suggest when using a jig with hula trailer, or just a hula with a jig head.. any help, videos that show how, or anything would be great! Thanks guys =) Quote
