Super User Catch and Grease Posted May 17, 2014 Super User Posted May 17, 2014 Get one of those EWG hooks with the screw at the top and a weight used to balance tires. Flatten out the weight with a hammer and cut a piece off and wrap it around the bend of the hook then place super glue or electric tape on the weight to keep it from sliding up and down the hook. Doing this you can customize the amount of weight you want on your hook. To rig it just screw the top into your craw or whatever and then rig it just like a Texas rig but with the hook point sticking out the top of the bait. Sorry in the picture I didn't have any screw on hooks, you can't do this with a normal hook because you won't be able to rig it right, that was just an example. I prefer wrapping the weight with a piece of electric tape to make it snag less and not pick up random junk from under the water. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted May 17, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 17, 2014 These are the hooks you should use. Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 You can get the jig hook and screws at Barlows and make your own for alot less too. Quote
mikey5string Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 A bunch of companies make keel weighted hooks. I use Owners "Beast" for swimbaits and smaller sizes when I want to swim a tailed worm or craw. I guess if you have the materials already making your own might save a bit. I would be concerned with getting the weight perfectly balanced so the bait stays horizontal when fishing it. Could probably pound any old lead weight around it without too much effort. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted May 17, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 17, 2014 Yeah any weight works, its trial and error because it wont fall horizontally if its off just a little. You don't need a lot of metal ethier in the picture I wrapped a lot just so the camera could see it. I dunno if it saves money I just thought it was neat and its something I did for fun, thought I'd share it with you guys Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Or you could just buy the already made weights from Bass Pro... Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted May 18, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 18, 2014 But what's the fun in that? Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 But what's the fun in that? The fun comes from fishing, not from making a simple task much more complicated and time consuming. 1 Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted May 18, 2014 Author Super User Posted May 18, 2014 I lost my last moaner hook yesterday and didn't want to stop using the rage rig for the time it took to order more. When I said it was fun I was being silly of course buying the hooks designed for this will produce more fish and be of better quality. Quote
livetofish28 Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 I do just fine with my mustad power lock plus with the adjustable weight Tight lines Andrew Quote
paangler13 Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 cool trick! Don't let the "just buy it crowd" bring you down! There is nothing like catching fish on something you made yourself! Jim Quote
