I have a 1987 Evinrude 88hp engine on my boat. Always runs great, but every once in a while I get an overheat alarm. The engine is always peeing water out and does not feel or smell hot. The alarm goes off after about a minute and may not come on again for several fishing trips. Is this just an electrical short or should I be more concerned. Sorry I am not very mechanical on this sort of thing. The engine always runs normal and is not negatively affected by the alarm. It is loud and annoying to me. Any help or suggestions, without an expensive trip to the shop? Thanks.

When was the last time the water pump/impeller was replaced. Just because it's peeing, does not mean it has enough pressure. It needs 16 psi minimum, do you have a dash WP gauge?

Could be a TSat sticking, could be a sensor bad.

If it was run in salt water, could be corrosion in the passages.

Without the mechanical skills, all of these can be a few hundred dollars each and it may require going through each one, starting with checking wiring and sensor, then the WP, then the TStats, and if a salt water motor, pulling the heads.

Just read the second post, the 88 does not have VRO. It was an economy version of the 90.

I believe you are correct TorqueConverter. It has only come on when slowly moving. maybe it is just sensitive or needs a little more rpm to keep it cool. If it ever gets worse I will take it in for service. Thanks.

Is possible that the alarm is sounding when moving at no wake speeds?  I need a little bit of RPM/throttle with my Johnson 150 when traveling at no wake speeds or I'll get the over temp alarm after a while.

If you are having that issue, you both may want to look into impeller replacement.

Yep, at idle, heat alarm should not come on.  Maybe impellers or thermostats.

Put a impeller on it buddy, those edges come apart at least they do on my Yamaha 55 so it's cheap.... Getter done!

Happy boating!
