Super User ww2farmer Posted March 18, 2011 Super User Posted March 18, 2011 I'll take all the Spro frogs off the hands of the people who don't know what there doing with them. Like senko_77 said, the problem is you, not the frog. And for everyone who switch's frogs and magicly starts hooking up, I bet you also started fishing them right. I have fished every brand of frog on the market, except for the new Koppers, and have caught fish on every one, there are reasons I choose the Spro as the frog I use now. IMHO the R2S is garbage. The only other frog I keep around is Snag proof's "Bobbys Perfect frog" but they fall apart easy, so I hardly use them any more, and when what I have is gone I'll be 100% Spro. Quote
KC Bass Fanatic Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 i think you need to Waite until after the blow up and actually feel the fish pull, i know its hard trust me but it might just work for ya I second that. If you use 50lb braid (minimum) and a stout rod then the spro frog is plenty soft enough to penetrate the hooks. 9 times out of 10 when people are having trouble hooking up with hollow body frogs it's technique error. Like the other guys have said, let them blow it up and take it down. Wait until you feel the weight of the fish, take up the slack and put the hammer down. You'll hear "count to 10" or something similar - well sort of - it's more of a feel thing. It might be 3 seconds, it might be 15. I hook up 90% of fish like this on a spro bronzeye. I use primarily SPRO frogs and I never make hook modifications. Also, don't think of it like a plastic worm or jig - they won't spit it out. My theory here is that they want to reposition the frog in their mouth to swallow it head first, so they take it to a safe location in their mouth before attempting to swallow. I've waited on fish 10, 20 seconds - set the hook and its right in the top of the mouth like it should be. Anyway I've gone off on a tangent. Long and short - wait longer before you set the hook. Super User J Francho Posted March 18, 2011 Super User Posted March 18, 2011 I don't wait very long at all to stick them. There is a gap, but that's just the time it takes for my eyes to see that the frog is gone. If it looks like this, you're doing it right: Quote
L a r r y Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 What I did to help with the hook up ratio, was take a pair of pliers, and bend the hooks upward away from the body, not alot, but just enough to where there is a little more space between them and the frog body. I don't know if it actually makes a big difference, but it gives me the confidence of allowing the fish to get hammered when I try to break it's back on the hookset. Quote
Super User CWB Posted March 18, 2011 Super User Posted March 18, 2011 I also think where you are fishing it has alot to do with the hookups you'll get. If you cast it on top of a mat of slop, and get a blowup chances are the fish will inhale a bunch of slop around the frog too and you'll be lucky if you get a hook in him. Had that happen enough to know. Set the hook and all you get back is a frog covered in moss or other gunk. If you're fishing pads, or other overhead cover like that, your odds will be better but the fish could still miss or only get a leg. If you're fishing more open water with no overlaying cover on top as in the video, you will not have near the hookup issues, especially if the fish are as suicidal as those were! As Senko said, set the hook as hard as you possibly can and crank for all your'e worth. I set the hook so hard that I almost throw my partner off the back of the boat and still do not connect sometimes due to reasons listed. Froggin' and Rage Shadding are my favorite ways to fish. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 18, 2011 Super User Posted March 18, 2011 I used to wonder about the blowups that miss. I'm talking the ones that off by a foot or more. I figured out that they weren't misses at all, but direct hits.....on little sunnies and gill following my frog, LOL. Quote

I remember Scumfrog made a lure with 2 toads about a foot apart. Don't know if it ever caught on. (pardon the pun) Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 18, 2011 Super User Posted March 18, 2011 Get a Mattlures Hard Gill Floater, and you'll prove it to yourself in slobs. Quote

This fish came completely out of the water on each occasion. My fishing partners were yelling "you're working it too fast...too fast." I told them I thought the fish was blind. I got him on the next blow up. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted March 19, 2011 Super User Posted March 19, 2011 Is there a frog that weighs at least 5/8oz and has a body softer than a spro bronzeye? Or is there a way that i can make my spro softer so that i can see the whole thing in my hands instead of a splash on the water? Is that what YOU call IT, Spro Jr.? :-? :-? Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted March 20, 2011 Super User Posted March 20, 2011 Stay away from the River 2 Sea Step Wa frog. It sucks. You have to get the retrieval speed just right. Too slow and it has no action. A bit too fast is dives and spins. You have to fish it the same speed every time. Thanks. I've been eyeballing this one for a while now. It doesn't really sound like its for me then. Quote
bassmasterdb33 Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 I have no prob with spro, but the new improved tru-tungsten frog is much softer, but it has too be the new one the older ones are harder than the spro. Quote
PowerFinesse Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Change your set up... lf your not hookin up with a spro there is something else wrong. Quote
