airborne_angler Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 We all know spinnerbaits come in various weights. Whats everyones favorite/most productive weight of Spinnerbait to throw? Does everyone prefer a lighter(1/4 oz) model Or does everyone throw like a 3/8 oz and up? Why do you prefer to throw the size spinnerbait that you do? Quote
Andy C Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Depends on the depth of water or how deep you want it to run in the water column. 1/2 or 3/4 oz spinnerbaits work great for yo-yoing or slow rolling in water deeper than about 15 feet. I also like to wake the surface using a big colorado blade and 1/4 or 3/8 oz head. Changing the shape and size of the the blades will allow for deeper retrieves. Sometimes they want it burned in, other times just barely cranking the handle will trigger a strike. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted March 20, 2011 Super User Posted March 20, 2011 I throw 1/2, and 3/8 oz, and that's in mostly shallow water..I also use double willow blades. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted March 20, 2011 Super User Posted March 20, 2011 I fish mostly half ounce spinnerbaits. That's the size I have the most confidence in and the size I have the most accuracy throwing. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted March 20, 2011 Super User Posted March 20, 2011 I switch between 1/4oz and 1/2oz. 1/4oz is great for staying high in the water column at a slow retrieve and is ideal around shallow water. 1/2oz is great for deeper fishing and for fishing in a moderate wind. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted March 20, 2011 Super User Posted March 20, 2011 In spring I'll fish mostly 1.25oz co/Co, most of the rest of the year is 3/4 and 1/2 in w/W or co/W with a few indiana blades thrown in. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted March 20, 2011 Super User Posted March 20, 2011 Questions like this about spinnerbaits are way to broad to get a definite answer. It's more of a combination of head weight and size/style of blades used. Theres really no limit on variables.I can only adjust these things to suit what i am trying to achieve with my bait. For example a 1/2 oz bait is an entirely different animal with small willow blades as compared to say running a 4.5 colorado-#6 willow on it. In my general opinion though I think that a 1/2 is the most versitile well rounded weight. Quote

jdw174 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 For almost all of my spinnerbaiting I use a 1/2 oz size. Easy casting and I can burn it or just slow roll the thing. Quote
shootermcbob Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 I throw almost exclusively a 3/4 ounce spinnerbait. I vary both the blades and the skirt to affect running depth, speed of retrieve available to me, and size/profile of the bait. I like the strikezone master blaster hidden weight spinnerbait 3/4 ounce with gold scalloped willow blades and white/chartreuse skirt. Have had lots of luck with that particular bait. also, with a 3/4 ounce bait, I can cast it a mile no matter the conditions. Quote
Senkoman12 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 1/2oz chart. or white. i love to fish spinnerbaits but i only use about 3. a 1/2oz black sngle colorado, a 1/2oz chart./white tandem willow/colorado and a 1/2oz white tandem willow colorado Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted March 20, 2011 Super User Posted March 20, 2011 I totally agree with Bassin_Fin@tic. I switch out the split ring on the rear blade bearing and add a snap which allows me to switch blades for different presentations. Good post and point you made Bassin_Fin@tic. Quote

lynyrdsky1 Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 It all depends. I use 1/4 and 3/8 alot but will go to 1/2 in deeper water. The blades make a difference too. Quote
bandsr4me20 Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 I keep it simple and throw a chartreuse/white or white 3/8 oz spinnerbait. Ill throw a half ounce when im slow rolling it on the bottom or it is real windy. Quote
