KritterGitter Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Since I got the grill fired up tonight I was wondering the age old question, Gas or charcoal. Also whats you favorite meal to grill? I got the gasser fired up since I just got off work, have some potatoes cut up n roasting and will soon be throwing on some bacon wrapped steak medallions. I prefer charcoal but Im lazy on my work days! Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted May 12, 2014 Super User Posted May 12, 2014 I have gas. Favorite meal? Venison and baked sweet potatoes. Got some venison chops thawing now for tomorrow 1 Quote
Super User slonezp Posted May 12, 2014 Super User Posted May 12, 2014 Charcoal. I like everything on the grill. Steaks, seafood, chicken, veggies, don't matter 3 Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted May 12, 2014 Super User Posted May 12, 2014 Gas when I'm in my city dwelling. I'm too lazy after work to charcoal anything. Like Slonezp said. I will grill most any and everything. Ribs and brisket are the only thing reserved for charcoal. Quote

BeckieC Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 We use natural gas at home, charcoal when camping. My favorite meat to grill is a boneless pork rib, super tender and juicy every time and a very cheap cut to boot. I also grill potatoes and other veggies. Once the 100*+ temps hit we ban cooking indoors to help the air conditioner out Quote
Super User Raul Posted May 13, 2014 Super User Posted May 13, 2014 I don' t know what the hell is wrong with gas users, throughout eons men have hunted and grilled their kill over wood and charcoal, there is a philosophical and atavic comunion between men and the fire place, no way I' m going to change that, the caveman in me forbids me to, so, for me it's charcoal always. 2 Quote

Charcoal with some duck, deer or steak. Rooster, whats some good recipes for duck on the grill? Ive got venison, beef and some good pork ones but duck is def new to me. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted May 13, 2014 Super User Posted May 13, 2014 I can cook pretty good on a gas grill and it leaves more time to fish. Lol Seriously if I'm going to light charcoal I may as well fire the smoker and blow the entire day 1 Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted May 13, 2014 Super User Posted May 13, 2014 I prefer the taste of wood or charcoal grills. I do understand the convenience of gas, but I just don't think you get the same level of flavor. 1 Quote
BeckieC Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Sometimes I throw a couple bricks of charcoal or smoking wood in the gas grill for extra flavor, sometimes I forget....sometimes I'm just too lazy to do it Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted May 13, 2014 Super User Posted May 13, 2014 Gotta be charcoal...only takes bout 10 or 15 to get the coals going in a stove pipe, chimny or whatever they call that thing with the paper in the bottom and natural un petroleum flavored briquets in top. As far as food...it's all good 2 Quote

Super User Teal Posted May 13, 2014 Super User Posted May 13, 2014 I usr gas. I need to replace my burners. I'm thinking I will take them out and make a charcoal grill out of it. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted May 13, 2014 Super User Posted May 13, 2014 I prefer combination of charcoal and wood. Lay little strip of wood on top of the charcoal to give it good wood/smoke flavor. Sometimes I used either heat source on its own. I used gas when time is a factor, especially on week days when I work. Weekends on the other hand, I'll spend 6-8 hours outside smoking meat. On Mother's Day I smoked both ribs and chicken. I had ribs for supper that night, and ate the chicken the following day. We do that sometimes, cook multiple meats for the week days when we don't have the time to cook all day. Lately I been experimenting searing meats in skillet with olive oil. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted May 13, 2014 Super User Posted May 13, 2014 Charcoal. To me, using gas is like cooking indoors. Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Charcoal all the way. I had it until the tornado took it away. When we went to replace it we couldn't find one that looked decent. The new ones are butt ugly. The wife was involved or it might have been a different decision. I think that the gas grill is sort of a pain to clean on those burner covers. When you are about to run out of charcoal you know in advance, tank gas not so much. If I had a gas choice I'd go with natural gas. Steaks, burgers, chicken, dogs they're all good. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 13, 2014 Super User Posted May 13, 2014 I'll argue that using gas for "grilling" is no different than cooking indoors even with the flavorizer bars they say adds flavor. Charcoal al lthe way for me and the time it takes to get set up is about 2 miutes of actual work. Get out chimney starter, put newspaper on the bottom, fill the top with charcoal, light newspaper.....go inside and get your meats and things together and by the time you are done that, it is ready to go. For hot and fast items like burgers i like lump charcoal as it burns hotter and faster but for everything else i like briquettes as i can manage temps more easily. I'll grill anything and everything but one of my favorites is grilled cantaloupe wrapped in bacon...doesn't sound good at first but when you try it you will say now dang, that was tasty. As far as smoking meats go, I am partial to beef like brisket and chuck roasts for shredded beef sandwiches but pork butts and ribs are also pretty good. Tonight i will be grilling some chicken up so we will see how i decide to do it....BBQ or just basic salt and pepper. Might even make a grilled spinnach salad too....romaine works better to grill but spinach isn't bad. 1 Quote

I thought that was common knowledge I had my 22.5" kettle going with appetizers and sides and my 22.5" smokey mountain cooker going with a pork butt, ribs and baked beans this past sunday....can't beat having dueling webers 1 Quote
tholmes Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Traeger Grill + 1,000! I've had a Traeger grill for 10 years, and I'll never go back to gas again. Never. Charcoal is good, but the Traeger gives better flavor and more versatility than charcoal with the convenience of gas. Tom Quote

You mentioned that they give better flavor than wood or charcoal and I was wondering why that is, my understanding is that they burn wood pellets? I have watched that show grill masters several times and have not seen any of the contestants using these type grills, is that just because of size or what would keep them from using this type of grill if the flavor is better? Not doubting what your saying just trying to get a little understanding as I may be interested in making a purchase myself. Quote
jhoffman Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 i have a gas grill and a gas smoker lol. i use an amazn pellet smoker for both. you get wood taste, without the work Quote
