baileyjs Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 I'm looking to get a new setup prior to the bass opener here in a few weeks. I think I'm going to go with the Pflueger President either 6935 or 6930, but how do you determine what rod to go with it? I hear a lot of talk about "balance" but am looking for suggestions. I just recently got back in to fishing and will use it as an "all around" bass fishing setup mostly for soft baits but the occasional frog or popper. I'm up in Minnesota so we don't have the monster bass like down south but 5lb isn't unheard of. Thanks for any suggestions. Quote
BuffaloBass716 Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 I don't fish tournaments, I only fish for fun, from the bank, but I just started using a Pflueger President 6930 with 10# power pro braid and a fluoro leader paired with a 7' M/F Abu Garcia Vengeance rod. This set up has been amazing for me. I can feel ever piece of cover really well, I never new that stuff was in there before lol. Like I said, since I fish purely for fun, and I don't buy the most expensive gear, I'm not sure how much better the gear that is $100+... I'm sure other people will chime in and help out too, most people will say that the president in size 6930 is a better reel for bass fishing due to its size, and most will agree that it is one of the best reels you can purchase for $60. My Abu rod was $50 on TW and I couldn't be happier. Quote
baileyjs Posted May 12, 2014 Author Posted May 12, 2014 honestly I was originally going to go with the 6930 but it says it's only recommended for 8# braided and 6lb mono....maybe that doesn't matter that much and a little heavier line isn't an issue? What made you go with a 7' M/F rather than say a 6'6 MHF or MLF? Will I really notice much of a difference? I'm in the same boat as you....as far as not fishing tournaments, but we will mostly be in a boat rather than on shore. Quote
BuffaloBass716 Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 I just check the box for the reel, it says 10# is fine, and the fact that 10# braid has the same diameter as 2# mono, This gives you smooth, long casts too. I went with a 7' M/F because the longer rod adds to the casting distance, which is important for a bank beater like me, and I fish average cover, nothing too thick with some scatter logs. Its really about the area you will be fishing and baits you'll throw. M/F and MH/F are the most versatile and you can get away with throwing light versions of everything IMO. If you go with the 6930 President, you can pick a rod designed for the cover/style that you'll use the most. I mostly throw T-rigs, wacky rigs, weightless senko type baits, tubes, inline spinners, etc.. usually small stuff that catches fish regularly. Quote
Super User Marty Posted May 12, 2014 Super User Posted May 12, 2014 I have a 6935 which I use with a M/F or MH/F as an all-purpose outfit. Power Pro in 15# is my line of choice. Quote
hooah212002 Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 IMO, the 6935 is on the large/heavy side. I'd suggest the 6930 unless you use it for heavy duty stuff. But for an inland spinning outfit, I can't think of anywhere outside of the everglades or the bayou that needs a reel that big. As far as the rod is concerned, if you are going for an all around application, go with a 6'6" or 7' M/MH with a moderate to maybe a fast tip. Medium action, moderate tip may not have sufficient backbone for an all around set up, though. I would suggest a Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth rod, maybe a *** Black or even a St. Croix (insert model here). I have a Abu Veritas casting rod that I would not mind one bit if I got in spinning version. You can't really go wrong with the tried and true brands. The best and most surefire way to get what you want is to go somewhere that has a good selection and then pair it up in store to test it out. A good fishing supply store ought to have no issue allowing you to do this provided they are convinced you are there to actually buy something and not just wasting their time. Quote
