Mikell Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Now I understand what it is and how you compare it with different diameter lines. Mono/Floro vs Braid capacity and all that. What I would like to discuss is what is considered, in your opinion, over spooling vs under spooling. Ive heard some say over spooling causes problems and under spooling you cant cast quite as far, or spooling to capacity increasing castability? Id like to know also should I have spooled more line onto my optimus xihs? I mean it casts fine but what it if casts better just by adding a few more yards of line on there ya know? Or is that a "myth"? These are the things that I have been thinking about as of lately haha Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted May 12, 2014 Super User Posted May 12, 2014 Every time I retie, I notice my casts getting shorter... Quote
RipSomeLips Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 I have always read between 1/4 and 1/8 of an inch from the spools first edge. Looks like you are closer to the 1/4 parameter maybe? My first reaction is it looks perfect if you intend to put on a fluoro leader. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted May 12, 2014 Super User Posted May 12, 2014 I fill mine up to where the gold part of the spool is. Any less and I'd be spooling most of my baitcasters when I cast. Filling it halfway like yours would probably result in less distance with heavier baits, but initial startup would be faster so you could cast and pitch light baits more effectively. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted May 12, 2014 Super User Posted May 12, 2014 Mikell, when the line on one of my reels gets down to where yours is, it time to re-spool. Fill it up to the bevel on the edge of the spool. An unfilled spool has a few problems. To get the same distance the unfilled spool has to make a lot more revolutions. To achieve the same lure speed the unfilled spool has to rotate faster. Line memory is more apparent. None of these factors help. Fill it up. 1 Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted May 12, 2014 Super User Posted May 12, 2014 Yep, remove you're braid(save it) put mono backing on.. Reinstall braid... Unless you're just Straight out flipping.. It shouldn't matter much if Just flipping... Is that button a clutch release? It's sorta diff... I hear its quite a reel... You like? Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Spool the braid onto another reel. Fill the reel with backing mono. Peel off 2 1/2 casts worth of backing (75-80 yards). Refill with braid. When the braid gets low again from retying strip it back to the backing, discard and refill. This keeps the spool full the most economical way. As for how full to keep the spool, where you're at is border line for peak performance but not super critical. I fill to couple layers shy of the bevel. Quote

I'll just reel it off, then put it back on. I would take that line off and save it, then add what looks to be about 15 yards of 12lb-ish mono, then add the braid back on . It will fill the spool closer to capacity, which should add some distance. More line weighs more, so it keeps the spool spinning faster on those long casts. You're also killing your IPT by having a half full spool of line. When a reel says it takes in 29" or whatever, that's based on having a full spool. Take off 20-30 yards of line and that number goes down to 21-23" Quote
