Minn Kota Edge Steering Issues

Tried out my new edge today with the cable drive and really struggled with the steering.   There must be some adjustment that I need to fix because it was crazy trying to keep this thing straight.  The footpedal would just wander all over the place spinning the prop in every direction but straight.  I would barely touch it and it would go all the way forward or back never balancing in the middle.  I know it takes some getting used to compared to the electric footpedal unit but you would have to have the skills of a tap dancer to get this thing to work right.  I also see why a recessed foot mount would be so much more comfortable.  This thing is very cumbersome.  Anyone else have problems with this?

There is an adjustment screw right by where the cable goes into the pedal. If it is wandering and you can essentially move the pedal about without the motor turning this is where the problem lies. What it is, is a tension adjustment for the cable. It is wandering because it is loose and becomes sloppy. Tighten that up, and I promise youll feel an instant change.

Thanks for the advice.  I will play around with the adjustment to see if that takes care of the issue.

Smacker is spot on with the tension cable ... Make sure that's tight. Also when the arrow on top on the motor is pointed straight does the boat go in the straight direction?

Not sure as I could never get the arrow stable.  It was wandering all over the place.  If it isn't is there an adjustment for that as well?

Adjusting the pointer requires taking the head off.  It can be down fairly easily, you just have to remember how all the pieces/parts go back together.  When the trolling motor is stowed on the bow, the pointer should be in line with the foot of the motor and pointing opposite to the orientation of the prop.  That's the easiest way to check and you can do that on dry ground.

I read today that you always have your foot on the pedal, which I did, until I could control it.  Had to Use my hands to get out of a near disaster around some rocks.  I am used to the electric steer so this is going to be a big change.  I heard some love it and some hate it.  I will say that the wind may have had alot to do with it (20mph) but the tension will need to be adjusted because it seemed just too out of control and touchy.  I hate the fact that the footpedal  it is so much higher than my powerdrive electric was.  It is just awkward to control imho.  I saw the recessed foot trays but really don't want to drop another $100 into my trolling unit.

Yeah, they aren't meant to be pointed in a direction and let go. You keep your foot on it for constant direct line to what you're foot is doing. If you give it a chance, you'll love it, especially if you fish a lot of shallow water. I'd suggest taking it out on a less windy day and getting used to it then. The foot pedals are a bit higher but you can rest more weight on them than you can with one of the electric ones so you aren't trying to do a balancing act. The recessed pedal trays are nice, but I can understand where you don't want to spend the extra money for that. I guess my best advice is to keep an open mind and give yourself some more time to get used to it. If you can't, try the troll perfect accessory, and if that doesn't work for you then maybe cable drives just aren't for you.
