n8casCT Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 I do a lot of SHAKEYHEAD fishing up here in CT. This year, one of my goals is to make SHAKEYHEAD fishing a strength of mine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I know there are many factors that go into making these decisions but, let's just say generally speaking (or most of the time): 1/8 or 3/16 ? On spinning set up... I don't like going below 6lb diameter Flourocarbon line ( I usually use 8lb). Should your weight of the jig head be mostly determined by 'feel' on the bottom? Different jighead shapes? I use football head in rocky areas stand up jig heads in hard bottom structure, same with ballhead. I use straight inline eye for grass (the yamamoto jig head with the eyelet inline with the shank -- it pulls through grass better than any other jig head I use where there's grass on the bottom) Soft plastic set up? Use a jig head with a spring mount, run it down the shank to put a little 's' in the plastic, use a spring loosely attached to jig eyelet so it moves more freely ? Hook? Thin wire -- texposed, exposed, t-rigged? soft-plastic? Floating tail? Thin soft plastic finesse worm, modified creature ( I like cutting the head off an ozmo and using it with a 3/16 ballhead) Obviously I'm not looking for all the answers here, any advice would be very helpful. Super User Raul Posted March 18, 2011 Super User Posted March 18, 2011 So you are asking my point of view or what I do: Weight: 1/8 or 3/16 ?, doesn 't matter, for me it has do do with where and how, I use from 1/16 up to 1/2 oz. Setup: spinning or casting for me is the same, I have spinning and casting gear from UL to H and a rod becomes a X lure/technique rod the moment I tie X bait to it. Line: I fish mostly with nylon, if I 'm going to fish where there 's a lot of cover then I 'll use copoly or braided, and I may fish with 6 lbs all the way up to 20 lbs. Jighead shape: most of the times I fish round ( ball ) jigheads, however, on rock I prefer a football head, stand up ? I have a few and I swear I haven 't touched them since the day I bought them, I like darter heads for more open watter situations ( off the bottom ). Hook: thin wire for thin/fragile baits on little cover, heavy wire for beefy baits and/or heavy cover Rigging: for thin wire, scarce cover, light line --> texposed, for heavy wire, plenty cover, beefy baits --> t-rigged Soft plastic: in practical terms any soft plastic is shakey headable Quote
n8casCT Posted March 19, 2011 Author Posted March 19, 2011 Thanks for the reply... I guess I was looking to see what people throw most of the time-- including jighead Weight, shape, hook, gear, line, etc... Quote
MonarkMcfaster Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 My ShakeyHead: Quantum PT Tour spinning rod 6'6" with a Cardnial reel. I use 8lb BPS Excel Mono in low-vis geen. I carry several sizes of hooks, head types and different weights but usualy around 1/8oz on a ball jig head works the best for me. NOw for the baits I use it varies a lot, It all depends but I usually stick with smaller baits...a 3 or 4" Yum Dinger, Ring Worms or even 4" lizrds. Quote
