BassnChris Posted May 11, 2014 Author Posted May 11, 2014 I feel for you buddy. My advice is to contact Bill Dance. He will likely have some suggestions for you. Glad to hear you kept your cool, my 'truck driver' mouth woulda surfaced for a good hour or two especially after the tire. Of course I've been known to fling expensive drivers into the water on the golf course while attempting to author some new profanity. Hope MotorGuide will at least replace the mount. There were a lot of garage words for the tire. Whats up with that hub? Three lugs? Id be changing that out for sure. That's not the hub......it is the spare tire mount. That is a MotorGuide Wireless correct.... Yes......Xi5 You can very easily not secure the mount while turning the handle. What I have learned to do is turn down the handle some and then push up making sure that little bar is seated in the cradle and then proceed to crank it down. As far as the unit being fixable I would guess you may have fried the mother board but they are no biggie to replace... That is how I mount it......lock it in place and then crank it down. In the pics you can see where it failed. Quote
BassnChris Posted May 11, 2014 Author Posted May 11, 2014 Oh I'd say it worked alright. It disconnected pretty quick! Yep you're right! Quote

Brian Needham Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 The power was disconnected before it hit the drink. always a good thing........ like when we run a mower in the pond at the golf course (happens at least once a year) I always tell guys.... if you bail off, make sure you turn the key off before you do! 1 Quote
Dinky Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 While I am sympathetic to your TM issue, I have had my own problems with them and it was during last year's road trip. Other than those two things, how was the fishing? Quote

B@ssCrzy Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Wow!!! That is one bad day. I feel for you man!! Thanks for sharing that. I never would have believed it would do that without that video. I was thinking of buying the quick release myself, but after seeing that I think I will pass. Quote
Maico1 Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 After looking at your pics what a NightMare it gave away like that.I have had my W75 bent to the point I thought the shaft would snap but it never did along with no mount failure either..I would like to know how MG handles this for I have been thinking about upgrading to the Xi5.... I was thinking of buying the quick release myself, but after seeing that I think I will pass. I'm hoping they will agree it was a faulty quick connect plate and make things right. I may or may not go back to another quick connect......I do like the ability to quickly remove the TM when I want to. That is suppose to be how the Xi5 handles it too. I will keep everyone apprised to the outcome. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted May 12, 2014 Super User Posted May 12, 2014 That surely popped off very quickly I wonder what's in the water there? It looks weird the way the TM just took a dive. I look at it this way we can replace material things. No one got hurt so it's not that bad. Quote

The hull of the boat road up over it when I turned around and re-traced my track...........we were moving at idle and I quickly turned off the big motor and trimmed up....but it altered my path enough to avoid the motor but I could see the tree this time on the sonar. And that is what I told my son........everyone came home alive and unhurt (physically ) so that was the best outcome. He agreed. Quote
HeavyFisher Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Chris, I am definitely sorry for your lose. Having to spend more money definitely sucks, but to be honest I laughed very very hard watching that video. Not at your misfortune but at the fact I've never seen anything like that before. One second there the next second POOF, I probably re watched that video 50 times. Again sorry for your misfortunes and yes I know I have an immature sense of humor! I love how it turns to look at you for a second like its saying adios, then boom away it goes Quote

I love how it turns to look at you for a second like its saying adios, then boom away it goes That's ok...............I have laughed at it too........later when I watched the video..............Live not so much......but no emotion at that moment either.....if you watch closely.....when it 'looks at me'.....I turn to look at it thinking...'What are your doing...I have pressed no buttons nor stepped on the pedal?".......Then Bang! it abandons ship......my 11 year old son said, "that scared me".....he thought it had ripped a giant hole in the boat......it was a very loud departure. I called Motorguide and they said to take it to my local autohorized repair shop (less than a mile from my house) to check the motor for water infiltration, look at the quick mount and have them call Motorguide and they would decide where to go/what to do from there. now the waiting game for a while I guess. 1 Quote
HeavyFisher Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Well that's good news you got the ball rolling on this. Hopefully it can be a free repair! Quote
BassnChris Posted May 17, 2014 Author Posted May 17, 2014 Update......shop is waiting on schematics...since it is so new they don't have them yet...I'm their first. Yay! Shop hoping to have the schematics by mid week. Hopefully they have some kind of loaner program....I'm watching Craigslist too trying to find a temp unit so I can fish next weekend. I will update as I get info. 1 Quote
Ark Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 It hurts to watch.... Sorry for your loss Chris. That reminds me... It's time to check on my boaters insurance Quote
BassnChris Posted May 21, 2014 Author Posted May 21, 2014 It hurts to watch.... Sorry for your loss Chris. That reminds me... It's time to check on my boaters insurance They told me last Thursday they were waiting on MG to send them schematics...................still no determination as to whether they will cover it or not................so no insurance claim as yet. I am going to stop by the shop tonight......but I'm afraid that if they get the schematics today and MG is going to fix for free it will still be next week or the week after before I get it back...........to be honest....if I had it to do all over again knowing what I know now.....I would have just filed a claim and already replaced the TM. But it is always a good idea to review your insurance coverage........especially anytime you add new equipment. Quote
ProCrafter Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 WOW!! I always wondered if the quick connect/dis-connect rigs would do that.... And the tire thing is making me re-examine my tires right now!!! Quote
BassnChris Posted June 19, 2014 Author Posted June 19, 2014 UPDATE: Motorguide says since the motor came off due to a 'collision' they would not repair/replace the trolling motor or quick connect base plate. I still contend the plate was faulty and should not have broken like that dumping the trolling motor into the lake. I was not moving very fast at all......only 2 or 3 on speed......and bumped the submerged tree......any trolling motor shaft would flex/bow and bounce off the tree. I maintain that the Xi5 is a good motor and not responsible for the dunking incident. I have already purchased a new Xi5 and mounted it directly to the boat. I really wanted a quick release but after that incident and the fact that motorguide will not stand behind the product......will not buy another motor guide plate and will probably not buy any other plate either. Can't see risking another $1500 trolling motor on the $100 poorly designed/manufactured quick release plate. The reps at motorguide say they have never seen that before nor has anyone else I have spoken to......but since motorguide won't stand behind the product......they are making you gamble that your high dollar investment on a trolling motor mounted on the bracket is just a crap shoot as to whether or not you will be out $1500. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN MOTORGUIDE. BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK. You make your own decision or draw your own conclusion. Quote
