Kayak Trailer

What do you guys use as a trailer for those who trailer there kayaks. I'm without a truck and looks like I won't be getting one anytime soon so now I'm thinking I will just get a trailer for the buick and tow the kayaks to where ever. I googled it and they seem expensive. Cheapest I seen was $700 I could probably make one or just buy a small trailer for less then one specifically sold for kayaks.

you can get one from harbor freight on the cheap, i heard they can be fun to title though.

Yes, if you go that route and get a trailer kit, be vigilant and make sure you get the certificate of origin in the package or mailed at the same time the trailer is shipped.

Most likely the origin is China.  Been-there-done-that !!!!

Do a google search for " Harbor Freight kayak trailer". Tons of posts and pics from various sites. Do yourself a favor and get the one with the larger wheels. They all come with a MSO for easy registration. Check you local DMV first though. Not difficult to get registered.

How many do you have? If you have 2 or less you can tow them on the roof with some kayak foam pieces. That's what I use. Have you tried a local Craigslist section? You might be able to find one cheaper then $700.

I would go with a roof rack and save the hassle of a trailer that you have to modify.  I have heard of a lot of people liking the harbor freight deal and just as many who had nightmares titling, like has been mentioned, shoddy workmanship and having to rebuild them pretty much from the gourd up to be safe. The other thing to consider is the tire size and how far you will be traveling with the trailer.

 

Personally, i am saving up till i can get the trailer i want and just dealing with putting my kayak on top of my wrangler.

Yakima Rack and Roll, this is my 2nd trailer and the Rack and Roll is by far my favorite.

I have just the one right now my wife wants one though. I would go the roof rack route or even fold the seats down and shove it in the back of our truck but the wife says no way. She doesn't want me to scratch or dent up her pretty new buick SUV(it's ugly and a POS in my opinion but.....) I tell her it won't scratch the truck with foam or something down plus she has a luggage rack but I still get shot down. I've been searching CL and just scoping out jet ski trailers just sitting around all the marinas by my house.

So she has a suv that she doesn't want to use as a suv. She should have got a car. If you put a blanket down it wouldn't get scratched at all. Are you going to be able to tow anything with it because the hitch ball on it might get scratched lol.

Oh yeah look at motorcycle trailers, golf cart, or lawn mower trailers.

I've been using Thule roof rack for many many years for camping, skiing, windsurfing etc. Depending on the car and type of roof rack foot, the max weight limit is different, but I see people with two kayak all the time.

 

I just bought a harber freight trailer for my inflatable boat. It's taking long time to assemble and modify.

If you are like me not knowing anything about trailer, allow yourself lots of time to figure things out as you build. The instruction doesn't tell you much about things like proper way to tighten or pack bearings. The grease fitting broken on me. The coupler malfunctioned. Took me for awhile to figure this one out. I almost brought the couple back to harbor freight tool. I'm now working on decking part and I am almost there.

 

I agree with others, if you can get away with roof rack, go with the roof rack. Simpler, easier and cheaper.
