GoRavens Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 i just bought a lews speed spool as my first baistcaster. its the 100$ one not the laser mg. it will be going on an ugly stik gx2 6.6 medium rod. does anybody have any tips for this particular reel? which line to put on it? Quote
Super User MCS Posted May 9, 2014 Super User Posted May 9, 2014 You sir officially have the best name on the forum. I am a balmorian I would got with 12 pound mono. I prefer sufix seige or berkely big game. Once your familiar with casting (assuming you are new to it) 30 or 40 pound braid is what I would use adding a mono or floroleader if needed. Also if you are primarily throwing hard baits you may just want to stick with mono. Enjoy the new reel Quote
hooah212002 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Can't go wrong with some 12# Yo-Zuri or 12-15# Invizx. Depends on what you are going to use it for, though. ::edit:: MCS is right. Sufix Mono is cheap and REALLY good. Elite is good stuff, if just a tad bit stretchy. Haven't tried the Seige but it gets plenty of praise around here that I am comfortable recommending it. Since it is your first baitcaster (correct me if I am wrong and I don't mean to offend), maybe just some cheap Trilene while you learn to cast it. No sense spending $20 on a spool of good stuff just to have to snip it all due to birds nests. get some KVD Line Conditioner to ease that pain. However, I think it would be better to learn to cast without line conditioner so you don't train yourself to be dependent on it. very few lines are so terrible that you really NEED line conditioner. Cgrinder Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 If you're going Sufix, grab the blue box Siege and not the red box Elite. The blue stuff knots like a champion, resists abrasion and pike teeth, and behaves reasonably well on a casting reel. If you have a local Dick's, it's usually on sale or like $7 for a 330 yd. spool. 1 Quote
GoRavens Posted May 9, 2014 Author Posted May 9, 2014 You guys are awesome. What # for the siege if I go that route, 12lb? Quote
hatrix Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 For me I would say in a mono copoly type line I would start at 15#. I feel like 12 can overrun a bit easier and is more prone to backlash and thinner line is harder to pick out and manage. Really though I would start with braided line. I don't know why people recommend to start with mono. You can completely destroy mono with a backlash and can't really do that to braid. Also braid doesnt have memory and won't fly off the spool like mono. It is rougher and easier to thumb because you can feel it better IMO. You can backlash braid all day and it will still be fine. Start to get a little overrun on mono or something and it will want to bunch up and spool off the reel and if you are not experienced with a backlash it can be overwhelming. Just my opinion. I taught my brother with braid and after a day of fishing he had it down pretty good. Any backlash he did get was generally minor and can always be picked out without running the line. At the worst case you can always cut your lure off and pull the line back through. There is no backlash that is impossible to get out. I have never cut out a spool of line in my life. Ever Quote
Scorchx1245 Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 15# mono for my baitcasting reel, tried 20lbs braid when I first started learning..., horrible mistake lol Quote
BasshunterJGH Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 I have 2 of these, one 5.4:1 and one 6.4:1. I use the 5.4:1 for crankbaits w/ 14 lb test fluoro and the 6.4:1 for spinnerbaits and topwaters with 16 lb mono. Great reel for the money, thinking about ordering 7.1:1!! Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 28, 2014 Super User Posted May 28, 2014 im assuming 12lb as well I'm assuming that you are referring to braid with this comment. Absolutely do not go that light on a baitcast reel.....especially when learning. My choice would be 40# Sufix Performance to learn on. I've had this line on one of my reels for 5 years. It may not be the latest and greatest, but it still is a very good line at a reasonable price. Quote
IAY Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Before you ask us what kind of line to put on it, what kind of fishing method are you going to be using it for? If it's just going to be general purpose, I would stick with 15 pound mono/fluoro or 20 pound braid. Quote
CDMeyer Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 What will you be using it for? If it will be an all around rod then I would go with Mono Quote
hatrix Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 I am pretty sure the line is about what is best to learn with and not his end game line. My choice for anyone learning would always be braid. You can't ruin it from a backlash and it gives a better feel I think to learn with because it is not smooth like mono. Quote
