Nap8tak Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I recently purchased a Dobyns Champion Mike Long Signature Swimbait Rod and am curious if anyone out there has any recommendations for a quality reel to be paired up with it. $100 - $300 budget is in effect. I currently am using the Shimano Cardiff 401 on it and am thinking about switching it up with a Chronarch201e. I'm not really brand specific either and do use Abu Garcia's and Quantums as well. Never had tried out any other brands of reels but am willing to switch if it is the best setup for throwing 3oz. - 10oz. swimbaits. Thanks Bass fishermen. Quote
JGBassinAL Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I would go with a Shimano Curado 301E for sure! Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Consider a Curado 300E for the extra line capacity. Is a round reel out of the question? A Calcutta B or Ambassaduer C4 will stand up to years of cranking those heavy baits 1 Quote
TJS209 Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Lews Super Duty but then again I'm a little on the clueless side when it comes to throwing those big swimbaits. It does handle the rig just fine. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted May 8, 2014 Super User Posted May 8, 2014 I have a 300E and love it for many reasons! Quote

Super User tomustang Posted May 8, 2014 Super User Posted May 8, 2014 Nothing wrong with what you have already. What else would matter would be your line diameter Quote
OK Bass Hunter Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Buy a Shimano Calcutta 400TE or 300TE used on eBay or one of the forums. 1 Quote

Thanks Bass fishermen. What is wrong with the reel you have?Tom You guys are right it's a great reeI and I don't mind the Cardiff 401 that much only except the fact that the it is huge. I bought it over 10 years ago intending to use it as a live bait reel for Muskies and Large Catfish. It just soo happens to work really well casting huge swimbaits but is very clunky when I'm having to cast over and over again. I'm using Fireline XDS 85lbs line(not wanting to lose $20-$100 lures) at the moment and am still able to cast 40-50 yards. I'm new to swimbaiting so I'd just like to know what your typical setup would be line included. Lures I've been throwing include S-wavers 6", Savage Gear Line Thru Trout, High Power Gliding Gizzard shad, Luhr Jensen Wood Choppers. I do plan to get more lures and widen my selection. I like huddlestons, Triton Mike Bull Shad, Spro BBZ-1 Swimbaits, Etc. but I'll leave that question for another forum. I am throwing in Kansas and Missouri waters so I'm not sure how successful swimbaiting will be but I'm willing to give it a shot. Thanks for all your comments and shared wisdom. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted May 9, 2014 Super User Posted May 9, 2014 Lexa 300 has proven to be a super reel for me. The Curado 300 is a stellar reel as well. I also have a couple of Abu Revo Toro NaCls that are nice... Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted May 28, 2014 Super User Posted May 28, 2014 Curado 300D. Small profile for a round reel, xship, etc. It's a powerhouse. Quote
