SoMinnBass Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 I broke my Shimano Cumara CUC72MA 7'2" MH Fast while setting the hook on a fish. I was pitching docks, saw an aggressive bite, she swirled at the bait and ran with it, I set the hook, BOOM! The rod broke about a foot above the reel seat. I was perplexed. It was about a month old. The first thought that ran through my head was a gunshot haha! The bass got away. Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted May 9, 2014 Super User Posted May 9, 2014 Broke 2" off the tip of a NRX852, How? I really don't know. Clearly your mind has repressed such a traumatic event in the hopes that it would save you from re-living that moment over and over in your head for the rest of your life. I've closed a car door on at least two rods, and also rolled up a back window on one not realizing the tip was sticking out. It is still the hardest I've ever actually facepalmed before, it is always such a dummy move haha it only takes one second of inattention to break something that means so much! 1 Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted May 9, 2014 Super User Posted May 9, 2014 Dobyns DX 703 casting rod. Fishing with a friend and somehow we were casting different directions completely. My jig hook and his treble hooks "collided" in the air and the force of both of us casting in different directions broke the rod in half. Obviously a user mistake in this situation so I sent in the replacement check and shipped the rod back to Dobyns. Received the new rod but noticed the action is now "Fast" as apposed to "Extra-Fast" on the model I broke. Apparently the newest version with the redesigned logo now has a different action. It is too bad the original rod was better for what I used it for. Quote
David D. Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 I snapped a Walmart Shakespeare over my knee once... Simply because I had just had a huge catfish break off a line and the Shakespeare was the only rod nearby that held no sentimental or monetary value (it was not, however, the rod that lost the fish). Super User ww2farmer Posted May 10, 2014 Super User Posted May 10, 2014 Have I ever broke a rod??? LMAO that's like asking if water is wet. 1 Quote
Tylertut Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Just broke my first rod a couple days ago. Drifted into some trees in my kayak and by the time I noticed my rod in my rear holder was in the branches it was too late. I heard a snap, then sobbed my way back to the truck. Luckily it was a two piece so I just ordered a new top piece. Quote
OK Bass Hunter Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 I've broken 5 rods before. Four were broken because of my ex-wife's kids and a garage door. The fifth was me rushing out the door and the screen door closing on the rod tip. I've never broken a rod while fishing. Now that I've said that wait for my next post about me snapping a rod on the hook set. Quote
Grantman83 Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Broke my dads rod in the car. I had a carrot stick that broke 6 inches from the top slapping my Spinnerbait against the water to knock off some weeds. There is a reason they went under lol Quote

I broke a Carrot Stix once, just looking at them in a magazine. Junk rods. 1 Quote
rmcguirk Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Other than breaking off tips, today was my first time. My oldest rod and one that already had the tip broken off. It was great for smaller jerk baits. Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted May 10, 2014 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted May 10, 2014 I have broken more than ten. Rod locker, big foot, hook set, truck door, garage door, swinging big fish, kids using them, ect. I have also broken 2 reel seats and what seems like hundreds of guides. Quote
SudburyBasser Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 I must be the only angler on the planet never to have broken a rod! Oh d**n...by writing that I'm now guaranteed to break one next time I'm out. Quote
cbass12 Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Veritas. Had a jig hung in a brush pile in about 20' of water and I guess I put too much pressure on it because the rod snapped about a foot above the reel seat. Quote
