hoosierbass07 Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I'm curious - how many of you out there have broken a fishing rod? If so, what rod were you using, casting or spinning? What line, lure, lure weight? And how did you break it? Car door, setting the hook, casting it out, fighting a fish, etc? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 8, 2014 Super User Posted May 8, 2014 Fell face first into a pile of rocks. Broke 2 four inch pieces off the tip. Falcon Expert 7' MF. I about cried. Was my favorite rod at the time. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 The surest ways to break a modern high modulus rod are high sticking, swinging fish and any other motion that bends the tip beyond 90* to the butt. Bang it off a rock, boat cleat, C-rig weight etc. compromising the integrity of the blank fibers and the chances of a failure rise rapidly. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted May 8, 2014 Super User Posted May 8, 2014 I broke a fave rod fighting to get it out of my first Cajun Bass Boat ... Rod locker was side designed And they were tangled... I was tired , hot... Jerked And broke the tip... My fault! But I have never broke one fishing.. Never... One time I noticed a Sic guide had broken (ring) that was during transport... I am careful and I guess lucky! Quote
Super User Raul Posted May 8, 2014 Super User Posted May 8, 2014 In my life I´ve broken 2 rods out of my very own stupidity and doing the same, overloading the rod trying to pull out a snagged lure. Quote
jignfule Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Broke 2" off the tip of a NRX852, How? I really don't know. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted May 8, 2014 Super User Posted May 8, 2014 I have broken two rods, stepped on one, a BPS Tourney Special, years ago. Most recently, last year, a G Loomis IMX. Lifting a 10" bass into the boat. Believe it or not, I told them exactly how I broke it and they replaced it. Hootie Quote
Brian Needham Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 snapped: Dobyns 733c off on a boat cleat Dobyns 735dx top foot off this weekend, snapped after I stumbled stepping up to front deck(boat wake), rod hit front graphs, next cast POP. Dobyns 784dx snapped top 1/3 off setting the hook on a rock..... I dinged it before so I was waiting for it to happen. thank God for no hassle warrentees!!! Quote
Super User bigbill Posted May 8, 2014 Super User Posted May 8, 2014 Let's see how many ways I broke fishing rods. 1. Rolled up the power window and cut 6" off the tip in the dark. After my first time ever fly fishing for pan fish with my $300 fly rod combo I got for $125 on clearance. 2. Closed the door on the rod tip and trimmed the tip by removing a few inches. 3. Slammed the spare tire on top of it while making room in the trunk. Nice Garcia 5 star rod. 4. Closed the trunk lid on it cutting the tip off again. I had plenty of ice fishing rods at onetime. I was good for a new rod every spring. Then I learned to put them away in there proper place. I hope my curse is broken now with the more expensive rods I have. Quote
ChrisAW Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Vendetta, line got caught on ex girlfriends foot and she went to take a step off the deck. Snap. Veritas, snapped when a 5-1/2 took a run while I was reaching for the net. Pinned the rod against the edge of the boat and it broke. Gander Mountain, one of their higher end rods. Tip broke when I was putting it in a car through the back hatch. Not even really sure how I did it. BPS Carbonlite on a hookset on a rather large fish. I can't think of any others at the moment. That is probably all of them. Quote
Super User tcbass Posted May 8, 2014 Super User Posted May 8, 2014 1.) Snapped an Abu Garcia tip off of my favorite rod by having the screen door slam on it when I was walking into the house. 2.) Had a St. Croix Rage rod tip snap when I was putting it in the rod locker of my boat. (Ironically, its my first boat with a rod locker and I asked the previous owner what he thought about rod lockers in boats and he said, "They break rods." I believe if I had a fishing sleeve on it the tip might not have caught and broken. My friend had an old, old rod and he only fishes about once a year, I was telling him how he should buy a new rod since his was so old and worn and a few seconds later he set the hook mildly on a small bass and his rod snapped in half. lol. Guess I was right. Quote
John G Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I broke a Loomis Carolina Rig rod by holding the almost verticle and for some idiotic reason, I pulled down on the end of line and the tip snapped about 5 inches from the top. I ended up selling the broken rod on ebay. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted May 8, 2014 Super User Posted May 8, 2014 I have broken 3 rods. 2 were St. croix Rage rods and 1 one was Carbonlite. The first rage, I broke on my 3rd cast of just getting it. I was bank fishing and went to do a low cast and the rod tip clipped the ground breaking off 4 inches. Second Rage, a little gator got really close to the boat, so to scare him off I tapped him on top of the head and it explosively snapped up at my rod. I quickly reacted, to soon find out that the gator snapped my rod tip. The carbonlite, broke after I set the hook on a nice bass in thick pads. The bait got hung up in the pads and I placed excessive pressure on the rod causing it to snap in half. I have learned my lessons since then. Quote
RipSomeLips Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Lost a 6 foot ultralight on one of my first trips this year. I had it get blown 3 feet and slammed in the car door from a gust of wind. Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted May 8, 2014 Author Posted May 8, 2014 I was wondering if anybody had a rod break when they were simply casting, maybe from putting on too big of a lure and whipping it back and as you cast forward it snaps or something. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted May 8, 2014 Super User Posted May 8, 2014 I've broken one rod in my life. Was catfishing with my cousin and we had our rods propped up side by side. He was off doing something and I was getting some nibbles. All of a sudden, his rod got smashed and I yelled to him "hey man, your rod!" Well, as luck would have it, my rod went down at the same time so I set the hook with the fury of god and he ran full speed into it and got smacked in the face. Snapped it right in two and we both missed our fish lol. 1 Quote
jhoffman Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 broke a rod no longer in production a 7'11" orvis superfine when I fell in ten years almost to the day that I got it. Got it back a week later and they replaced it free. broke a daiwa setting the hook with a jig on what i was sure was a fish that was wood. I jacked the hookset HARD. being lazy i stuck a 8' orvis zero gravity in from the rear of my suv. tip went inside the dash, pulled that one out and snapped it off. it was a rod given to me in a sponsorship deal, they replaced that free. At the time it had almost a $600 price tag. Quote
bassmaster8100 Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I broke one a few weeks ago as I was putting it in the rod box on by boat got a big gust of wind and lid on the rod box slammed shut on it Quote
ColdSVT Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Broke a lightning rod while fallin on my face 20 years ago...and a shut a bps procomp in the door of my dads truck about 20 years ago as well....have not broken a rod since 1 Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Broke 2 rods both the exact same way. I didn't lift the boat lid up far enough when pulling out the rod and the lid comes crashing back down. One day I'll learn. Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted May 9, 2014 Super User Posted May 9, 2014 Bang it off a rock, boat cleat, C-rig weight etc. compromising the integrity of the blank fibers and the chances of a failure rise rapidly. I'm waiting for my SCV dropshot rod to blow up. I whacked it pretty good on the gunnel a couple years ago. I know its gonna happen, just hope its not with a 7# smallie on the other end! Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted May 9, 2014 Super User Posted May 9, 2014 Only rod I have broke was the Academy's H20 7'6"XH, both in the same place. The top 12-16" exploded swinging in a fish with some grass. May have been that over 90 degree angle mentioned earlier but both broke in the same place. Believe they were XF action and have since decided XF actions aren't the rods for me. Replaced the first one, and just said the heck with it on the last. Good rod just not the rod for me. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted May 9, 2014 Super User Posted May 9, 2014 Twice 1 - While on the boat I closed the lid on the tip of one of my rods. 2 - Coming out of my canoe I fell into the water and snapped a brand new spinning rod right in the middle. Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted May 9, 2014 Super User Posted May 9, 2014 I broke my favorite Veritas a month ago: I was in a rush, had my new kayak on truck, tackle bag & PFD in back, and when I closed my tailgate - well, the Veritas got caught in the hinge. Thanks very much to Abu's customer service & their policy of selling a new one at fair discount. Quote
Preytorien Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 I was using a tungsten punch weight and as I was reeling in, just a few feet from shore I got a bite, swung and missed. But since it was such a short line hookset the weight flew up the line and smacked against the tip. It broke the first segment clean off. The rod had a lifetime warranty.....DSG replaced it over-the-counter. Quote
