Some of the small lakes I fish, the bass key in on Dragonflies during the summer.  They will follow them around and jump 2ft to get one.  Also watched about a 5-6lb bass follow a huge moth that happened to fly low to the water.  The fish tracked that moth for about 40ft before the moth flew higher.  So yes, they could eat a bird, but think they would be more apt to pick them off the reeds or if one fell into the water.

A bass big enough to try picking off a bird would leave more than little rings in the water. They can jump and you'd know it if they did.

I see this every year a Hen Mallard starts out with 12/14 ducklings and by the Fall 4/5 are left.

snapping turtles are quick to ****** them as well.

Largemouth bass can and do seize birds, and one of their most common targets is the red-winged blackbird.

When bass are shallow in spring, red-winged blackbirds are nesting in the stalks of cattails.

In any case, when a bass large enough of engulf a bird hits the surface, it's going to sound

like an alligator or like your tacklebox fell overboard.

When aquatic birds fly low to the water, their wing tips sometimes leave a series of rings on the surface.

Other than that, I would suspect panfish or baitfish looking for a stray morsel.
