Hey guys so I was wondering when you are shallow cranking how do you decide if you want to throw a squarebill or a roundbill? I always thought roundbills were more for just covering water and a little cover but not great at coming out of cover while a squarebill is mainly for deflecting off and out of heavy cover. I was watching a video on youtube though with John Crews and was surprised when he said he throws his roundbills when he is around cover and he uses his squarebills in open water to use their vibration to draw fish into striking. So I was just wondering how the majority of people decide which to throw.

I say pay no attention to the roundness of squareness of the bills.  Throw cranks that you have confidence in and catch fish in both open water and in cover.  While deflection off a piece of cover can be a great trigger you don't need a specialized bait just for that purpose.  If anything you'd want the proven quantity of the bait that has been able to get bit in open water.  Go throw that bait in cover be damned what it's bill shape is.

I question the importance of a square bill in working through cover.  I believe it's the line tie location, bill length, width and angle that allow the bait to come through cover well.  Even "squarebill crank" is basically saying "shallow crank".  "squarebill" is a cute and convenient name for broad billed, shallow diving cranks that run between 3 to 4 feet.

It depends on the bait. Square bills are kind of like the 4x4's of crankbaits. You can throw them in some pretty gnarly stuff without getting them hung up if you know what you're doing. That doesn't mean a regular billed crankbait won't catch fish in the same setting, it's just harder to get through all the obstacles.

If Im fishing very heavy cover I will use a squarebill to deflect off of cover. If it isnt that bad and I want to go from open water to light cover I will use a round bill.
