Preytorien Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Seems like when the mosquitoes are out they dial in on me like a Sidewinder missle. Nearly every time I fish in the heat of summer I'm fighting fish along with mosquitoes. I've heard of the Permethrin spray or soak being the stuff they use on expeditions to jungles and such as it has very good mosquito control properties. You spray or soak your clothes in it, let it dry, then wear those clothes and it's your repellant. You can wear it for about 42 days before needing re-applying. It'll last about one wash a week in the laundry for those 6 weeks. Seems pretty durable. Even the military impregnates the clothes for our soldiers in mosquito-riddled territories with the stuff. http://www.amazon.com/Sawyer-Premium-Permethrin-Clothing-Repellent/dp/B007VCRX2S I would use "Off" but I own an inflatable boat and the manufacturer doesn't advise using any DEET-based products on their material since technically DEET is a plasticizer and causes a breakdown of certain rubbers, plastics, and vinyl. Probably wouldn't hurt it in such small quantities, but I don't want to be out on the water when I find out that the two don't play well together. So that's why I'm looking at the Permethrin. Anyone use it? I read pretty much nothing but stellar reviews about it. I'd probably get about 3 or 4 outfits (shorts/pants/shirt/cap/socks) that I usually wear when fishing - soak em' and wear them only for fishing. Quote
HeavyFisher Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I use it alllll the time. It is wicked awesome stuff. Quote
Super User AK-Jax86 Posted May 6, 2014 Super User Posted May 6, 2014 Was out last night and the Mosquitos were out too! I used off but would get the occasional mosquito that wasn't affected by it. Going to give this stuff a try hope it works. I am same way have a few shirts, hats, and pants that I use for fishing so I will soak them. Quote
jhoffman Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 i use it, i make my own, if youve ever been on the hunting forums you might have seen my posts. its way to expensive to treat as much stuff as i do with pre mix. I do it for ticks here in the north east. Get a bottle of a product called Permethrin 10(i buy at tractor supply in the horse section, looks like a bottle stabil would come in but clear). Mix that 1oz to 20oz of water in a spray bottle. Spray on clothes till pretty damp, hang to dry. Can take 6wks or 6 washings, which ever is first. DO NOT wear while damp. 1 - 8oz bottle is about $8.99 = 5 cents an ounce 1 -20z bottle pre mixed is the same price = 44 cents an ounce You can buy it in even bigger bottles and get an even better deal. jhoffman Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 A little at first, dont get it on bare skin if you can help it, its not gonna burn your skin off but its not great for you either. Thats why you treat stuff and wait for it to dry. I assume youre asking relating to hunting. In the spring it doesnt matter, turkeys cant smell. In the fall, if you were really concerned hanging them outside for a few days after or even one wash cycle would make it not noticeable. I personally also have an ozone machine, so anytime something becomes really offensive, I just run it through that on a cycle. Ozone is bad for gear though so I dont do it often. I dont buy into the scent free industry personally. Now, dont get me wrong I dont go wearing cologne into the woods but if I dont shower I dont get worried because I play the wind to the best of my ability. Yeah I get busted sometimes, but its not that often. Ill take a little scent over ticks. What I try to avoid is doing things like pumping gas before hunting. Another thing I have seen is that scent free soap seems to help keep the bugs at bay, along with this stuff. I dont get eatn up like I used too. Quote
