jiggz125 Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 So I had Gander Mountain split 150 yds of 20lb PP braid on my spinning and bait-caster. I think the guy neglected to put enough braid on the spinning reel. After about 3 casts I would feel a violent smack and my lure would fall short...I looked and could see the brad was running out and catching on the mono to braid knot that was tied. My spinning reel is a Lew's Speed Spool and has its own spool for braid with rubber in middle, should I go back and have them re-spool 10lb Power Pro and not use any backing? First time with braid on spinning reel and I want to stick with it. Not sure if it was the lack of braid they put on there or the knot the gentleman at gander put on, it just kept catching on it, sometimes even before getting down to just mono the knot would stick through the braid and get hung up 10 yds during cast.. The first 3-4 cast I did get decent distance of 40-50 yards. Quote
hooah212002 Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 You shouldn't even see the mono after your longest cast and then some. The guy at Gander hosed the job (no need to yell or get mad unless they refuse to make it right. Mistakes happen and I can't imagine Gander Mt. sales clerks make that much money, so cut him some slack). Take it back and have them redo it at their expense. You should forget you even have mono backing on until you cut off a crap load of braid, not your first couple casts. IF you feel like the spool is too small for sufficient backing, use either a rubber band or electrical tape directly on the spool before spooling with braid. ::edit:: i just re-read and you said your spinning reel comes with a rubber back. In that case, it does not need backing unless you want to use it to simply use less braid. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted May 5, 2014 Super User Posted May 5, 2014 How did the guy determine that he put 75 yards of line on both reels? Quote
Super User Darren. Posted May 5, 2014 Super User Posted May 5, 2014 Agree with hooah, see if Gander will redo the job for you. Also, though, what kind of lure were you throwing? If a heavy lure, you could have gone down to the backing, but if the employee actually spooled 75 yards, that probably shouldn't have happened. I spool maybe 10 yards of mono first, then fill the rest of my reels with 10lb PP. Only times I've hit the backing is when I had to cut back for snags, etc., and the braid dwindles down. I still fish it that way, just use it for shorter quarters. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Ya, too much backing on one, not enough on the other. The problem now is, you have so little braid on the spinner you may as well just buy another spool. Seems like the store would at least give you a deal on it and spool it up right. Quote
jiggz125 Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 How did the guy determine that he put 75 yards of line on both reels? Thanks guys. That is what I was what I was thinking. I was throwing a Red Eye Shad...pretty decent casts but I didn't expect to see the mono that quickly...I will take it back and see what they can do for me. Wayne- I have no idea other than he told me he "thought he could make it work" Quote
Joe Schmuckatelli Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 why not just spool it yourself so you know its done to your liking? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 5, 2014 Super User Posted May 5, 2014 Yep, this is why I do it myself. It's not as convenient, but at least I know it was done right. Quote
