fishinthedacks Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 What do you guys do when people decide to fish next to you within a few feet? I got a hard strike on my lucky spinner from Sieberts (stocking up on these haha) so since these guys invaded my space I yelled fish on! The bass took off and they left their lines in the water. Looked at me like I was dumb. If you take a look at the pic you can see two of their lines wrapped around mine haha. Ended up being a touch over 4lbs. Not super long but chubby. To free my line and the fish without hurting it I cut their lines. They didn't say anything and I handed them their lures back. I got a dirty look but was I wrong? My line, my reel, the fish, my leg were all tangled in their line and I felt I was being as courteous as they were to me. Tossing their line within three feet of my casts because they saw me catching and then when I said fish on they left it out there. Idk I could have been wrong but still. Good news was only I caught fish and lots of them. Just because they were throwing where I was doesn't mean they were showing the fish what they wanted. testing this new phone and posting pics on here finally. 4 Quote
fishinthedacks Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 Still can't post pics with the windows phone. Wish this would get fixed. Guess I'll try sending them to my email and try to load them on from the laptop. I think this is a classic picture of fisherman with no respect. It killed me that one was in his late 30's and had 2 younger kids with him. Before I take my kids out they know all the rules, respect of the sport and our surrounding area. From how far apart to fish, to picking up trash that isn't even ours. Even if you have bad habits you shouldn't pass them on. Quote
fishinthedacks Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 This was after I cut most of the line. Only the fish was still hooked at this point. I didn't want the fish out too long still hooked so I got a quick picture and unhooked him from my hook, and the other fishermans line that was wedged in his gill and around the tail. Should have seen the mess he came up with though originally. Probably cut 20 yards of line total. Also those with really good eyes can also see a 2nd (of 3 lines) hooked around my line and down over my sweat shirt. 1 Quote
David D. Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 I'm generally a courteous person, but that would have really ticked me off and I would have let them know in no uncertain (but not inappropriate) terms. I think you handled it well, and nice fish! Fish on! 4 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 4, 2014 Global Moderator Posted May 4, 2014 If people get too close while bank fishing I just break out my "around the world" cast. Nothing gets someone's attention quite like having a set of trebles buzz by their head a time or two. 7 Quote
fishinthedacks Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 lmao I got a good laugh out of that one blue Quote
Cryoglobin Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Random muttering. Incessant mosquito spray in all general directions. Asking to borrow random items. Ask them if they have a daughter, and if so how old. 9 Quote
porkleaker Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 I politely ask them if they'd like a drink, and when they answer "sure" I push them in the water. 4 Quote
fishinthedacks Posted May 4, 2014 Author Posted May 4, 2014 Jokes or not if it gets to the point of everytime I get a fish catching their lines I very well may try some of these. Especially those who dont do a quick retrieve and just slowly let their bobber drift in my way. Quote
Djman72 Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Very disrespectful to do that, and quite tasteless. I come across this more when I am salmon fishing and it drives me nuts. Plenty of water to fish and you don't need to be in mine. I agree with whipping a treble hook at them should get the point across. Quote
bassguytom Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 The lake looks big enough where they could find a spot away from where you were standing. They only thing I can think of is that they noticed you were a Cowboy's fan and wanted to harass you. Just kidding some people just don't think. Nice fish. Quote
Pz3 Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 A lot of times I will take up a huge area fishing walking up and down the bank. So ill usually hang 10-20ft away from others. I have had people come right next to me when I find a good spot. It really annoys me. Buttttttt....... The most annoying is when a lake has only a couple places to fish from and a boater anchors off and fishes towards me!!!! Ive seriously considered using a huge saltwater rod with a heavy heavy heavy braid and a mess of trebble hooks to snag their line/lure and swipe their rods out of their hand. Havent had the balls to do it yet though. Also considering egg weights as perfectly acceptible projectiles. Quote
fishinthedacks Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 Yea that's a 1/2 mile + bank. Sure I was fishing where the spillway comes in because it is a hot spot but still disrespectful. And the other side has a small pond/lake with another mile of open shore and ton of stocked fish. Quote
fishinthedacks Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 Especially when you throw a pole with a bobber in a spillway current while fishing your other pole so your bobber keeps drifting to my side. I have no problem splitting a spillway if you stay on one side but dont think you and 2-3 other friends can just start tossing in everywhere. Amy even pulled her line out of the water b/c she couldnt find a spot to cast. I told her screw that cast over them with one of my cheaper spinner baits and snag them all lol she wouldn't do it. Quote
fishinthedacks Posted May 5, 2014 Author Posted May 5, 2014 Also on a lighter note even more props to Mike at Sieberts. My family is getting so mad that I'm catching with a spinner bait that I won't let them use I am placing another order with Mike and they all want me to order them the same one, the wife and kids all gave me 5.00 each to order them one. Normally I wouldn't take the money BUT I like having my secret weapon so they have to pay to get in on it :-p We have a "Team Mom" vs "Team Dad" competition going on and I'm way ahead. Losing team gives the winning time 20.00 each for items at BPS. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 5, 2014 Super User Posted May 5, 2014 I usually will just leave, let them have their fun. I did get really pisssed one time and really only because of the quality of fisherman I was with. I used to fish with a Hall of Fame fisherman, one of the leading authorities on freshwater stripers. It was an etiquette issue, this guy just knew better and it wasn't like he was catching his first fish. Over the course of a few days fishing in the surf every time I had a fish on he'd be casting over me, 3 days in row and I finally blew up. Glad he moved back to Tennessee. Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted May 5, 2014 Super User Posted May 5, 2014 In Michigan, we call these people "Seagulls". It doesn't matter where you are fishing, on shore, pier, ice fishing, or a boat, some people just need to crowd in on the so called action. Several times we have gone to a Rustic Campground with no one else around and the very next camper to arrive will setup at the site right next door. Most of the time, I see it as an opportunity to meet someone new, and most of them will give you a little more room if you ask them in a nice way. A lot of them just don't know any better, are new to the area, or are so hard up to catch something that common sense takes a backseat. However, one of the best ways to deal with the completely ignorant is to beat them to the punch. Cast over their lines first. If that doesn't work, remember to bring along a stick on your next trip. As soon as they appear to be thinking about crowding in, take the stick and start beating the water next to shore. In loud voice, curse the invisible snake and explain to them that this viper keeps crowding in on you. Ask them if they have snake bite kit because you left yours in the truck! 2 Quote
fishinthedacks Posted May 6, 2014 Author Posted May 6, 2014 Thanks! First I've ever caught in this spot. It's usually all LMB. Unfortunately I was a little more concerned about the lines etc to sit back and realize it was my first for that spot of the lake and my PB for the entire North end of the lake in General for a smallie. South end has some real hot spots post spawn for smb. Quote
Pz3 Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 These threads have to be simply the best. Love all the off the wall reactions. Quote
RF813 Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I was fishing from shore today during lunch, and there really are no other spots for me near where I was standing. This guy on a boat was maybe 300 yards away, making his way down the shore, casting and floating, casting and floating....all the way down.. Of course he ends up (And stays) right where I am... I KNOW he saw me because he asked me if I had any luck, and what I was fishing. I could have cast my line right into his boat. WTH is wrong with people? You're in a boat on this ENORMOUS lake, give me my little patch please. /rant 1 Quote
Pz3 Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Haha i wish I had video of the 8 boats that pulled up right where I was and started casting feet from me. Quote
Larry C. Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 When people get to close I find if I drop my pants to my ankles and sing a nursery rhyme I get all the space I need. 1 Quote
bartdude186 Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 I was in a small cove on the lake a few weeks ago in my bass raider minding my own business when a bass boat comes into the cove on plane, glides to a stop 20ft from me and proceeds to cast directly where i was fishing. First words out of his mouth "Sorry i'm in a tournament". i proceeded to cast as close to his boat as possible without hitting it and caught a nice bass right out from under his nose before he left without a single fish. 5 Dollar Fishing Game Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Tell them not to get too close because you have a stomach virus. Works for those people at BPS with the time shares and those survey people at the mall also. If all else fails, just fart. Quote
