Lure Savers??

Does anyone use these? There called "smart link"

 

These lure savers go in place of the split rings on your treble hooks. They have a break away poundage. When your lure gets snagged i figure it will give so your only losing a treble hook and not the lure? They come in different pound test too. It makes sense to me when where throwing expensive lures. I heard cabelas has them.

I don't know. I think the last thing I want is something that is made to intentionally break on my hook.

That sounds risky... buy a fabril 15' lure retriever. I bought this for getting my jogs snagged on lay downs and it works great. TW has them

Great in theory but wat happens when you hook into the bass of a lifetime and he makes a run at the boat and bend out the rings designed to do just that?

I have a sliding, hound dog type lure retriever AND a telescoping one. The telescoping one works better and will get a bait back if it can reach it. The sliding one works most of the time but not all the time.

My advice, don't use a lure if you think you might lose it.  A lure is meant to catch fish, not collect them.

I think if you aren't losing some lures you arent fishing then you aren't as productive as you could be.

With our $12 & up lures we can use the correct pound test lure saver were we won't lose fish but it will unlatch the hook when it's snagged saving our expensive lure.

I may try some. With 17# test we use a 20# or 25# lure saver it makes sense to me. Maybe higher 30#?

I use a lure retriever from shore when I'm above the water but on even ground the snagged lure is lost. I depends on the depth and if you hold your rod tip up in the shallows too.

The lure companies don't want you using this so you purchase more replacement lures.

I use my more expensive lures Where I know it's safe to throw them. But the smart link could change that. I don't lose that many lures. Most of the time it's one or zero per year. But we never know.

I would agree if you fish from the shore I know my retriever would be limited. How however if you get them I would be interested in how they work for you..

Found this helpful Bill, they do state in the review to be sure to use correct lb rating for your line ex. 10lb smartlink paired with 10lb line.

I think it's a great idea on the deeper running lures too besides the shallow lures when fishing around structure.

Now we can be braver around structure.

My son mentioned this once before that his sister company manufacturers these but I didn't give it much thought till now.

Im not risking it, no way no how. Go out and buy good lures, better hooks, the best line, the best rods and reels and then throw $75 down a day on fuel and worry about if the next big one is gonna bust a split ring?

 

I would have to see it prove itself in some extreme tests first. It would have to be reliable enough to get the bait back while at the same time reliable enough to hold a 20lb fish.

The odds of me using this product when I have to match the lb test to each lure or change the ring, not to mention have to put them on multiple lures....is about a million to one. Plus once you put the ring on a lure are you gonna start re organizing lures based on type then based on the exact lb test it requires?

I'm not saying your crazy if you use them, I'm just saying it would be a total kill joy for me.

I would not say it's a gimmick, I would say it isn't for me.  The intent of this product is to get your lure back if snagged, I do agree it may add some confusion.  The likelyhood of catching a 20# fish for most freshwater fisherman is slim unless you are targeting them.  It's going to happen once in a while but using your drag is going to prevent the fish breaking off the hooks.  I'm never afraid to lose lures, I do get snagged sometimes but most of my lost lures are due to cut offs or having to break a fish off because it's too big to land.  I have months thru out the year I can lose 20 lures, I'm going to use the lure I think best for the species I'm targeting.  Losing lures is part of the game.
