livetofish28 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Totally, My HH bass flipping rod were the blank meets the the front grip. Is smaller then any muskie rod I have seen, or owned. Even a MH muskie rod is bigger then a heavy bass rod. You can use a heavy bass rod. But there would be to munch flex in a bass rod. When using 2oz plus muskie baits. A heavy action or med-heavy muskie rod would be better. As for braid. That is all I use on my muskie gear. As long as you use a leader. You will be ok. I disagree my swimbait stick chucks 5 ounce Alabama rigs like its nothing. I can really whip that sucker Quote
Incognito Posted May 9, 2014 Author Posted May 9, 2014 Thanks for all your opinions! I'm pretty sure I'll buy the Abu Garcia C3, the size I'm not sure on yet, but my buddy even recommended it. As for the rod, I'm still undecided. I don't want a rod that will break under loads, but I don't want one to stiff either. My buddy that recommended the reel also strongly suggests an Ugly Stick GX2. Anyone ever use one? Quote
Jay Ell Gee Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Wait till you go saltwater fishing for big ol jack crevalles, redfish, snook, etc.. You will really rethink bass fishing. A 27 inch redfish on ML tackle will make you think hard about why you don't fish for them more often. They even hit topwater. It's not remotely fair. Luckily, in south La, we have brackish areas that hold both species. All that is usually needed is a topwater, weedless plastic/spoon, and a spinnerbait! Quote
VolFan Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 If i were you, I would do an Okuma Swimbait rod in H or MH, and a 200 or 300 series Cardiff. Then you have a very multipurpose stick, and you should be able to get it for sub 200 total. That C3 5500 is fine too though...nothing wrong with that. Quote
Incognito Posted May 11, 2014 Author Posted May 11, 2014 Thanks for the information! I'll check into the Okuma swimbait heavy rod. I've looked at the Cardiff, but I'm just not sold on it. Anyways, today I went to Fleetfarm and saw a medium heavy Shimano Sojourn Muskie rod and it looks well-built. Anyone ever use one? On the other hand, I went pike fishing today and had the best day ever. I landed 11, lost a few, and had probably 20 follow my lure. It was so awesome because I was fishing from the bank and I was the only one catching fish! Also, I caught my biggest bass to date. The beast was 20 inches and probably weighed four to five pounds, and I released it. Nothing better than seeing a fish swim away... Quote

Not a muskie rod, I have a soujourn sjs 70h, one of my barracuda rods. Casts great and I have landed many fish 40-50" on it. One of my buds has a Van Staal on one. Quote

What distinguishes a muskie rod is the heavier lure rate weight rating. You are not just going to be able to throw a 5 oz bait or heavier on a rod rated for say for 3 ounces. Muskie sized fish are caught on med or mh rods all the time, the lures being used weigh a lot less. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted May 11, 2014 Super User Posted May 11, 2014 Thanks, I've heard of the Abu Vendettas. The only problem I see with the rod is that they are not cork handles. I'm a cork guy until I die. I'll check into the Rat-L-Trap because I've never heard of it. If it's a pike catcher I'll need it. check out BPS graphite musky rods....they are on sale right now and can get a decent rod to fit your budget without breaking it. Quote

I'd look at the BPS rods, but I live an hour and a half away from the nearest one. I also like to see the item before I buy the item... Quote

I also like to see the item before I buy the item... I had to have my two shipped to the store an hr from me as well. I use both of mine for swimbait rods fishng 2-8oz baits. They don't stock musky rods at my BPS.....then again there aren't any muskies in CA. Quote
