Super User Catt Posted May 2, 2014 Super User Posted May 2, 2014 What's are Bottom feeder? CATT is Once the boat comes down off of plane the first thing I grab is a Texas Rig, Wacky Rig, Shaky Head Weightless T-rig, Carolina Rig, Jig-N-Craw, Mojo Rig, Rage Rig, Drop Shot or anything that takes me to the bottom. I'm gonna be casting, flipping, pitching, punching, hopping, dragging, shaking, dead sticking, or skipping. I don't care if its grass, brush, timber, rocks, docks, pads, lay downs, shore line or off shore. I don't care if its pre- spawn, spawn, post spawn, summer, dog days, fall, winter, morning, noon, or night. Give me 2 rod-n-reels with any of the above techniques & I be happy, happy, happy! 7 Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 2, 2014 Super User Posted May 2, 2014 Depends. If on docks and piers or other structure I will go with the bottom hoppers. If they are on moving baits then I will go with a spinnerbait or crankbait. Quote
aceman387 Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I am a bottom feeder also. I have four rods rigged up in my truck one has a jig, and the other three are a texas rig, split shot rig which i sometimes switch to a light mojo rig and a drop shot rig. When i got back into fishing 5-6 years ago after being out of it for decades i bought a ton of tackle including treble hooked stuff.I found i am geared differently and prefer bottom contact fishing with jigs and soft plastics. I am addicted to feeling the bottom coming through my rods knowing any second could be a tap I hear comments from some of my power fisherman friends because i have been known to take a few minutes between casts which drives them nuts but thats the way i am and the way i love to fish. Super User Lund Explorer Posted May 2, 2014 Super User Posted May 2, 2014 I wish I could say that I'm strictly a bottom feeder, but the siren call of that darn Pop-R gets me to waste a couple of hours every morning. Once the big fireball gets high enough in the sky, then I finally settle down to the bottom where I'll stay for the rest of the day. I've always felt that by fishing a vertical bait that I can not only catch those active biters, but also entice those neutral fish as well. Of course it also helps to know the water you're on so that you know the high percentage spots to target. That's much easier than having to cover lots of water looking for the places that the fish call home. BTW, I always palm my baitcaster, and the line is always running over the top of my index finger. Super User geo g Posted May 2, 2014 Super User Posted May 2, 2014 Catt, I could not agreee with you more. In Florida with all the thick vegitation, 90% of the time I'm grabbing Texas or Wacky rigged plastics. Once in a while I'm throwing top water. Quote
Todd2 Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I'm in the club for the most part. 80% Jig, T-rig, or C-rig. 10% Cranks..bottom bouncing usually. 10% Other..Spinnerbaits, Top water, etc. Quote
Mccallister25 Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 Im most def. a bottom feeder. I may fish with various lures and techniques at any given time, but 100% of the time I have either a jig, or t-rig tied on. Quote

skeeter1980 Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I'm mainly a top feeder.I eat my food from the top, work my way down to the bottom.Oh we are talking about bass fishing. In that casse,i'm still a top feeder.LOL Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 2, 2014 Super User Posted May 2, 2014 I'll feed on the top and get smashed by a 30 pounder, which is exactly what happened to me both this morning and yesterday. Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted May 2, 2014 Super User Posted May 2, 2014 Fishing , the ultimate contact sport !! WWOOOHHHOOO !!! Quote
Super User Teal Posted May 2, 2014 Super User Posted May 2, 2014 I'm definitely bottom and structure oriented. Its my go to, (jigs,t rigs, c rigs, shaky heads,) I also know when I need to move a bait horizontally. A lot of times ill use the horizontal moving baits to zero in on where I need to be to set up the jigs and t rigs. Last Saturday I could not buy a bite. But as soon as I threw the chatterbait and big squarebill it was on. There is nothing like a jig bite, or pulling a 5 lb fish with 10lbs of salad draped over him. 1 Quote

Super User Raul Posted May 2, 2014 Super User Posted May 2, 2014 I hate bottom feedin´ , that don´t mean I don´t do it, about 1/3 of the feeshin´ time I bottom feed but 2/3 rds thankfully I don´t have to do it. So, nope, I ain´t. Quote
Raignis Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 During a weak moment I did once think about law school. That is on the bottom. I've just started using shaky head in the last couple weeks and have been happy with the results. I find the slow action of it relaxing. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 2, 2014 Super User Posted May 2, 2014 I'm with ya, Catt, I got whiskers. For the most part, even moving baits have to get to the bottom - cranks, spinnerbaits, spoons, etc. that's where I most often find the biters. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 2, 2014 Super User Posted May 2, 2014 Catt, your PD was a crankbait fish, red trap as I recall. Tom Quote

Steveo-1969 Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 Count me in! Ever ytime I fish I think I should really throw a bait with treble hooks, then I grab a jig or a t-rig. Quote
slimshad Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 Always have bottom baits on my sticks. I have been down sizing my tungsten and when wind allows I go as small as I can. I like to feel that "Thump" and just reel down and whack'm. I haven't done the check, is he still on there thing in years. I remember Bill Dance saying "boys if you feel a tap, set the hook. They ain't got hands..." Hope to pitch some baits i flooded bushes tomorrow. Can't wait. Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 So all I throw are Texas-rigged and Split-shot soft plastics. Does that mean I'm a bottom feeder? What if I swim a Texa-rig or Split-shot plastic bait? Then am I middle feeder? Quote

HeavyFisher Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I prefer to stay on the top for a little before I move to the bottom. Quote
