I went out today and absolutely killed small bass on a tiny white one bladed spinnerbait. I dont have a whole lot of experience or confidence with them, die to the fact I havent really fished with them since I got into bass fishing a few years ago.

Are spinnerbaits effective throughout the summer? Also what is a good all around, can't go wrong, color/ size for quality fish?

Welcome to spinnerbaits. My first one was a small one blade spinner bait in white. Glenn here guided me through the basic spinner bait specs for success.

My two main setups are,

Clear to slightly stained water.

1/4oz gold Colorado blade, blue glimmer skirt with a mister twister 4" split double tail grub as a trailer with a trailer hook.

Stained to muddy water,

1/4oz gold Colorado blade, hot chartreuse skirt with a mister twister 4" split double tail grub as a trailer with a trailer hook.

Don't forget a shot of YUM shad scent.

This is a suggestion to get anyone going into spinnerbaits. I'm sure the larger ones work. I just haven't graduated from the smaller ones yet.

I just ordered some from Sieberts Outdoors to try them.

Thanks Bill. Hopefully Ill get some more replies, and head to BPS this weekend. Catching seven of them today sorta up'd my confidence and Im curious to see how they pan out over the summer, if I continue to use them. The bass were hitting them pretty aggresively today.

Stained to muddly water w/ muddy water preferred.

In clearwater you really need to burn it or present it quickly off obstructions(there are better lures for clearwater sunny blue skies)

Wind or surface ripples preferred

Rain even better

Early spring

Fall

This is when they work best for me.

I'll use any spinnerbait as long as it's made by War Eagle.

3/8 white/chart tandam nickel/gold willow/indiana blade will get you through a lot of situations.

When there is a little, even to quite a bit of wind, I throw spinnerbaits.  My favorite is a 1/4 oz Tandem Chartreuse white Booyah.  Caught so many fish on those spinnerbaits.  Then in very stained water I will throw a chartreuse Luck'e'strike Rick Clunn Trickster. THat bait will throw off a crazy ammount of thump.

Spinnerbaits are the most versatile bait in bass fishing. No other lure I know of works in more conditions other than perhaps a jig. Spinnerbait bites seem to be the best with a little chop in the water when the water is clear to lightly stained, and in partly cloudy to cloudy conditions, but don't follow that rule hard at all. A flat out great lure. If cloudy skies or low light conditions are out and topwaters aren't producing, burning a spinnerbait is a great alternative.

It's one of the first lures I reach for in spring too, slow rolling it works great at any depth. I don't use spinnerbaits lighter than 1/4 ounce, and seldom do I go heavier than 1/2 an ounce, but sometimes a 3/4 ounce spinnerbait is great for covering lots of water or fishing deep. Generally for me, the shallower the water, the lighter the lure.

I like double willow or tandem colorado/willow blades for clearer water, and tandem willow/colorado blades for stained water, and a double colorado or single colorado with a BIG blade for murky water and night fishing.

For blade colors, silver or silver/gold are best for clear water. Murkier water calls for double gold or painted blades. Painted blades also work well in clear water. My favorite skirt colors are golden shiner, chartreuse shad, white, chartreuse and white, and black. For clear water with lots of shad, a natural shad colored skirt is hard to beat.

As far as retrieves go, the cooler the water the slower usually. Often in deep water when fish are deeper I will retrieve slower to keep it deeper. Burning is best in low light conditions or in cloudy, windy conditions. But burning it can work well in clear water too. Unless the water is cold, start with a medium retrieve and if that doesn't work, try slow, or fast until you find what the bass want.

I use a trailer hook unless I'm fishing weedy, grassy areas.

I make my own and in Spring I like using a white/black skirt and a double willow blade (one real small and one pretty big (#6, i think)) on a 1/2oz head. I use a pretty heavy trailer, either a salt craw or a GY craw or a Wave crawdude. Then add a trailer hook. The Kansas bass love the white/black combo skirt in spring, I guess it mimics shad pretty well.

I fish a small pond in town and when using either this or an all white skirt, I often see shad following it to the bank. They sometimes bump it which really feels strange.

The reason I use heavy is because it's ALWAYS really windy here in springtime.

I have become a HUGE fan of the Louisiana made Humdinger spinnerbaits, 1/4 oz. out here in the swamps and marshes that we bass fish in, they are almost standard equipment!

Fleck has been making spinnerbaits for over 40 years. They catch fish. I still use them today. They are not quite as popular as some of the other brands. Not sure why. Maybe because they don't cost $8.00 a piece? :)

Look for the Mann's classic spinnerbaits. In blue glimmer(white) or chartreuse. These Mann's classics offer a double gold Colorado or a Indiana blade and a Colorado blade. These seem to work for stained to muddy water conditions.

The Mann's spinnerbaits are tough to find I get them from Amazon.com.

I got this hot pink spinner bait with triple blades, what water conditions would that be good for....I'm being serious.

Go to www.siebertoutdoors.com and order some spinners. They are awesome. They only use the best parts to build their baits and the price is nice too!

Spinnerbaits in single colorodo gold blade white, blk, chart skirts in 1/4-3/4 always worked well for me up North for fish of all sizes, all year round, and I also like Double Willows in silver or Gold, or a colorodo/willow...I never got into colored blades, usually favored Hammered over clean finish, and alsmost always would do well on a white skirt chart trailer, or chart skirt white trailer....Orange and brown is always good for me as well,  especially pre spawn...That is actually one color on one bait that I can say for sure will make a difference on many days when they won't react to whites, blk, charts etc....Orange crawfish blades worked, but I used to kill them on a 1/8 orange brown double colorodo or willow, stanley Wedge, and always BPS brand.....never liked small spinnerbaits, I find 3/8 or 1/2 to catch more fish than a 1/8 and I used to love a simple curly tail grub, or twin tail.

Now Terminator Titatiums go on sale for $5 and that lure holds up, bends back, has nice flash in the skirts, and I recently had a few good days on the Booyah Real Gill 3.99 in a 7/16 willow tandem and also a Hildenbrant Snagless Sally inline in 3/8 chart.

I fished nothing but spinnerbaits and Ribbon tail worms (CUlprit and power Worms) for years, and now I will go chatterbait over spinnerbait all the time. I learned it and get it, and I feel I can do more with a Chatterbait, and it seems to find Larger Fish.....I like the custom designs with quality hooks, nice skirts, good paint since I will often let a chatterbait sit still, or not move at all, spinnerbaits I either reeled, or let it flutter down.....
