I just got a quantum smoke in the mail, used during one tournament season. It functions 100% but is not as quiet as my other reels. It makes a bzzzzing sound when i reel it in, and almost feels like i can feel the gears rolling together through the handle. There are no crazy clicks or vibrations, its just noisey lol

Is this normal or do I need to go have it checked out profesionally?

I would certainly get it checked out professionally or return it if you have any concerns.

That said, it is my experience that Smokes are a little gear-y and a little noisy.

Fix it I believe the reel noises can go down our line into the water.

hmm how much would we be talking? just simply replacing the gears or what?

A new reel shouldn't start doing that after one use. If it was older I would just say take it apart, degrease it, then put a small amount of grease on the gears and oil on the bearings.

First question, it still under warranty?  If so send it into Quantum, turnaround time is 48 hours for freshwater reels and 24 hours for saltwater ones.  I've become a believer of sending my reels back to the people that made them, unless it's a minor repair that a local can do.

If I am understanding him correctly, he's saying it was used through a tournament season, so who knows what kind of treatment it was exposed to. Some of those guys are very rough on their equipment.

The reel is used. He started a Thread about how he just bought the reel on eBay and he couldn't wait to get it. Sounds like you may have bought a lemon. Then again, there was a Quantum Thread, I think it was last week or so, where DVT posted that he thinks that Quantum is the best of the worst! I got a chuckle out of that. LOL

yeah i mentioned that it was used in this post as well lol who knows man its all good tho its jus a reel eventually all things will wear out or need some sort of tuning up, i got it for a decent price so putting a lil more to tune it up wont be that bad

This is common in these reels. Replacing the gears will only be a short term fix. It won't hurt anything including scaring fish underwater. With a whole tx season on it the reel could probably benefit from a deep cleaning. If you want to send it I'll check everything out.

Be careful with used reels on sleezebay. I was collecting the older Shakespeare bait casters for my museum to show how reels advanced. I like to try them too. Some are worn out parts reels sold as good working reels. While some are still like new. It's a pig in a poke.
